upgrade to G35x?

i currently have an '05 TSX 6spd with 53K miles, and recently moved to the east coast (philadelphia). i've started to look for an automatic car, as my wife unfortunately cannot drive a manual transmission. I was able to find an owner of a '07G35x with tech/premium pkg 28K miles (basically fully loaded) who is looking to downsize. we checked out each others car this week, and both are pretty much in excellent shape. looks like a win-win for both sides. i would be trading my car + cash for the g35x (i was going to offer the bluebook difference between both of our cars). i've never owned a nissan/infiniti product, and was wondering if anyone here has and has had any experience with them. i've always had honda/acuras and have never really had any major issues over the years, can i expect the same from infiniti? some pluses are that it is an automatic (necessary for the wife), has navi (kind of regretted not getting it on my TSX), and the AWD is attractive since i've lived on the west coast mainly. i've not really had any issues with my TSX these past four years, so i'll definitely miss it. let me know what you guys think...

I have experience.
I own a 2008 G35 sport, tech, premium, blah, blah loaded.
I also own a 2008 TSX.

It is a much different car.
As far as quality goes, there's only a few minor things that
urk me a bit about the G.
The dual climate system is kinda junk. there's no inner cabin
air temperature sensors and it's not as functional nor as exact
as the Acura setup.
The seal on the moonroof is a joke.
You cannot go through car washes with pressure jets (touchless)
or it will leak for sure.
Other owners complain of wind noise as well.
The G will burn tons more gas too, if you don't drive it like a granny.

Positives is that is has an amazing engine.
The navi unit/software is superior to Acura's.
-just got to get used to it.
It's much more advanced in features and such.
My sport package has some stuff yours won't like the
sport seats, paddle shifters, LSD, blah, blah, but overall
simple things like all auto windows, power adjustable
guage pod, hard drive for the stereo, etc will make
the G stand out on techie features.

It all depends what you want from the car.
The G is vastly more powerful, AWD, has a few more options,
and the reliability is fairly good, not all that far behind new Acuras.
There are still lots of mods for it.
But it's bigger, and it eats more gas, it's not as nimble.

they're both good cars.
and when given the chance to drive either, I drive the TSX.

so what about the G is most appealing that a newer TSX won't solve?

i'm pretty flexible on the car, my main requirements were that it be an automatic. this owner just happens to have a g35x, and is interested in the TSX as a partial trade. i'd rather avoid trading-in at the dealer and buying new or slightly used as i know i would spend a lot more that route. thanks for the comments on the g35, that helps a lot. i was definitely impressed with the techie feature on the g35. i actually thought that my TSX had a better overall ride/handling and nimble feeling, but the g35 did have more power. he said he averages about 22mpg on the g35, right now i average about 27mpg on my TSX.

sounds correct.
those are my averages on both right now too.
22 and 27.

oh, the grille on the G chips really easily.
and the paint sucks just like the acura paint.

Yeah, I would listen to MMsTSX's advice, since he has both cars.

BTW, I'm sure your G35s will handle just as good as the TSX with some coilovers and a RSB.

yeah, it would certainly need a new suspension.
it's quite floaty right now as far as I'm concerned.
it feels like a much bigger car to me personally.
and the stock wheel gap is pretty ridiculous.

my wife is against me lowering the G, but man...
stock suspension is just not the way to be... lol.

I would not do it. I had a few nissans and hondas, I've recently come back to acura. In terms of the black book value, I suggest you check it out for sure. in my experience, the depreciation that infiniti/nissan suffers from is unmatched by any other japanese car maker, I wouldn't be surprised if the value of ur tsx is pretty much the same as the g35 (then consider that the G was far more expensive when brand new)

The two nissans I owned in the past both had their engines replaced under a recall. The transmission (manual) on the maxima was replaced twice due to a defect. The motor was way too powerful for the transmission. I am leary of owning nissan products.

Just curious, what % of that is city/highway? I am always blown away by how poor Infiniti's MPGs seem to be when compared to other similar models.

Welcome to Philly, SunnyG, and good luck w/ your decision! There are a lot of pros and cons to the area but overall, I love it here. It does take a special kind of person to really be able to enjoy it, though, fair warning LOL

ESHBG, thanks for the welcome. I do like it here. we live in center city near city hall, lots of things going on all the time. my wife loves it, more importantly, lol.

blue book on my TSX is $17,500, blue book on this G35 is $25,500. I was going to offer the difference in blue book, which is $8K. I just put new tires on the TSX, just had it serviced, and had PA inspection/tags this week, so basically it needs nothing. His G35 has 28K miles, so the 30K mile service is approaching, and i believe it's on the first set of tires, so I was now thinking of offering $7K in light of the maintenance that will need to be done.

I think the TSX has held up really well over the years, honestly still drives like new. the infiniti just didn't feel as solid/rigid, but then again i only drove it briefly. I'm still on the fence about the trade, but with only one car between me and my wife, i think it'll make things easier to have an auto when we take it on trips and she can use it for errands.

I'm also weary of nissan after my bad experiences over the past 3 years with many models. If auto was really necessary, I'd trade into a TL/TSX, aside from that I'd consider pretty much any Japanese car over Nissan.

Here's an idea... get an auto TSX.

Don't get a G35x just b/c some guy has it and its convenient. Its fun but burns gas like a mo-fu

the G35 owner ended up wanting more cash, so i ended up not going with the deal. I think it was a nice ride, with some cool features, but at the end of the day i didn't think it was worth getting rid of the TSX plus a significant amount of cash. the TSX really does hold its own, especially in the long run. it still feels just as solid and stable as it did on day1, which can't be said for a lot of cars.

i'm going to wait for the G37x sedan myself that comes out at the end of this month. it has 7 speed automatic and has 328 hp and good fuel economy 18/26 mpg. don't read into those stories about crappy nissan/infiniti quality. it's not true. my dad still owns a 2004 G35x and it has better quality than even my 04 TSX. no problems with his car, no rattles, still drives like new, and the VQ engines can kill any VTEC engines anyday. also, i love the G35 exhaust sound compared to our wimpy i-VTEC sound. before that we had an I35 and that had no problems either.

Actually Honda/Acura cars for us have had more problems than Infiniti cars we've owned.

first off they are not stories-they are fact. It happened. I am also sure there are horrid experiences with honda/acura and all other car makes. I am not a fan of automatic so I go for vehicles that have manual transmission. Yes, I am a female.

nj2pa2nc, can you teach my wife how to drive a manual? i honestly need someone else to show her how, we've tried several times, but it's kind of been a struggle. i think i just need to leave her alone in a secluded lot and let her practice for an extended period of time.

The g37x does look pretty sweet, i'm sure you won't be disappointed Mokos23, you'll have to let us know how it fares on a daily use...

That is how I learned to drive manual. I first got the hang of first gear on a flat secluded road. Once I got used to that I went on to more adventures. I actually hated it when I started but once I got the hang of it- I loved it.

I'm going to test drive it and will probably wait until they start having sales or special financing or deals on the G37x.

the Tommy Kaira setup is about $10k.
body kit, exhaust, badging, cf engine cover, steering wheel cover, etc.
it's a full kit for sure. you can get the individual pieces at japanparts.com.

im thinking about getting g35x/g37x as well, mostly for the awd and the 300+hp doesnt hurt. i had a maxima before and nissan is pretty much just a good as honda, overall i mean, im sure people had good and bad experiences with both.

I have a maxima its been incredibly reliable, I have a bad gascap right now but thats easy/cheap to fix.

Otherwise I just do the maintenance on the car and it keeps running. Interior isn't built as good as honda/acura but overall its a good car.
