tsx speakers - tweeters too loud...

Hey Guys,

Recently bought a used 2004 TSX (no navi). I like the car, but the stereo sound balance leaves something to be desired in my opinion. It seems difficult to get a good sound due to the way they balance the woofers/tweeters out of the factory.

In general the low end is decent. I plan to add a sub to balance out the low lows. However, the mids and highs really suck. The highs, say above 8kHz, are way too pronounced and the mids/high mids say 512Hz - 4kHz are not there enough. This makes it difficult to compensate with the bass/treble adjustments. Defeating the treble also defeats the mids. My assessment is that the tweeters are too loud compared to the rest of the system.

With this in mind, I am looking for a way to "rebalance" the system without replacing the factory parts. I am guessing there are passive crossovers either at the amp, or at the speakers. Or possibly active crossovers in the amp.

Has anyone had any success tweakng these levels? I suppose some attenuation could be place between the amp and the tweeters?

I am curious if anyone else has tried to adjust this shiz?

The high notes can actually be turned down. I know that in the navi version, you can hit the button that says "sound" and you can adjust the treble and bass. Usually turning down the treble and the bass up solves that problem. I believe in the non-navi it may be a matter of having to hold a button down and you can adjust bass and treble with the knobs.

But you probably need to just

Look for answers from elduderino. The guy knows the TSX system inside out and sideways and will give you some good tips. Have you thought about popping the tweeters out and just putting some kind of a cloth covering on them? They also reflect off the windshield something fierce so maybe a translucent film in the corner of the winshield might do it (although at the expense of aestetics). Lastly you might look at replacing the tweets. Good luck.

I have definitely thought of just disconnecting the tweeters. Cause I would like to actually turn up the treble to clarify the mids. So, they just pop right out of the dash, eh? I will have to check that out. I guess they can also be disconnected at the amp, huh?

Yea, they pop out. Probably easier to do this then disconnect at the amp. You would have to jack with the wiring harness...

I usually keep the treble turned down one notch in my TSX with the stock sound system. Otherwise, it's a bit too bright and brittle. I also turn the bass down one notch, otherwise I get buzzing sounds from the door during low bass parts.

The tweeters have kind of a cruddy xover in the amp.

There is a good-size hole in the midrange where the tweets don't play down to and the mids don't play up from. This means that the highs sound louder by comparison.

And after very little time the 6x9s get loose and sound whuffy.

Aside from that it's a great OEM system.

Here's a review of the CL-S Avincar upgrade system and I think Pilbox's review of the TSX system is in here too...

I just disconnected the tweeters (at the tweeter), and it definitely changed the sound, in my opinion for the better. I can crank the treble up to about +4 now, which gets the mids a little clearer, and now the tweeters aren't killing me. I am realizing I will need to replace at least the front speakers (both tweeters and woofers) to get a sound I can dig.

Cool...Talk with elduderino over in audio and video. He upgraded my system using just coaxial MB's (10" sub also)...Dunno if components are necessary...

yep, i just disconnected the tweeters and put them back in...took about 5 minutes. Still the sound sucks though. I will be replacing the speakers... Already have the jl sub and rf amp from last car, so I am set on the low end. I just need the mids and highs now.

Are the kits from elduderino pretty easy to install? Affordable? How many of you guys out there have stuff from elduderino vs other aftermarket speakers? What rocks?

Let's do a little poll... reply with:
1. what speakers you are using?
2. how much you spent on them (roughly) ?
3. how satisfied you are with the speakers you currently have ?

I'll start:
1. speakers: acura factory speakers
2. n/a
3. they suck

Sometimes the tweeters sound too loud, sometimes they're fine. It depends on the CD. If they seem too loud, then I just turn the treble down a notch - that usually fixes it.

I actually think the frequency curve best fits Jazz and Classical types of music. Since we all have XM, I'm sure most of you have sampled the different stations and notice that the system suits some music types better than others. Honda may have done this purposely with a target consumer base -- or its simply a coincidence.

IMO, the best sounding stations for our system are:

70-73 Jazz
110-112 Classical
160 Comedy

Bad sounding:
165 - not enough bass for the hard hitting rap music

Ok
160+ R & B

I did the same thing, after upgrading the door speakers from stock/OEM to Alpine Type-S coaxials. The whole reason for the upgrade was because I could've sworn I had a blown speaker (not the infamous door rattle, which I also had/might still have). After I installed the 4 speakers, I still heard the horrible sound. I popped out the tweeters, disconnected them, and covered the plug/wire ends with electrical tape. So far, I am pretty happy with the change. Now I'm wondering if I should put something where the tweeters go. Maybe a flower vase like my VW New Beetle had.
