tsx popularity

I just came back from lunch, and a couple driving a jetta next to me at a stop sign said they were looking at getting my car and was wondering how much i got it for. I pretty much made a 30 second pitch of how its a great car and for them to get nav if they buy it hehe. tsx represent!

oddly enough, if all goes as planned, i will be trading my vw jetta 1.8t for a tsx (carbon grey -- i know, i know everyone has that color! -- 6mt, no navi) later on today.

as much as i dont want to have car payments again, i'd rather pay car payments than non-stop repair expenses on the jetta.

here's to hoping honda/acura reliability is all it's advertised to be!!

can't wait!

What year was it? Cause my brother has an 04 GLI 6spd and I'm wondering if that car will have problems.

Palidanx - You have cool people in your area. If I tried to do that, I'd just get dirty and suspicious looks.

Amen. I traded in a 98 Passat 1.8t last weekend for the same reason.

represent Dan!

I do get some nice looks from people that like my car. Heck, I went to test drive a Subaru with my brother and all the sales guys were crowding around the car saying how much they liked how it look.

good idea! mine even encountered the dreaded oil sludge issue, so needless to say, it was quite a relief to get that car (curse?) off my hands!

mine was a 2002. it seems that the 1.8t's were plagued with a lot more problems than the VR6 in your brother's car, but honestly, if i were him i'd dump it once it goes out of warranty. better to be safe than sorry....

Actually it's a 1.8 also. I guess that's bad news for him.

It is popular. For a cheap price, you get a nice luxury badge and a loaded car. I do find while ther forums here are dominated by men, I have seen maybe 95% woman driving the TSX. Its very popular with girls.

My 2002 1.8T Passat was in the shop so often, VWOA purchased the car back. (After threatend with a suit under the lemon law)
The top requirement for the replacement car was reliablity. I also wanted luxury, style and power. TSX came to the top of the list. 10 months of ownership later, the car has only been back to the dealer for the 5k and 10k service.

Settlement w/VWOA was $19.5K. The car has about 30K miles when I gave up on trying to keep it running.

I traded in an '02 1.8T, 5-speed, sunroof, leather, monsoon, etc. with 63k miles and they gave me $6300. there was probably around a grand worth of body work that they'll have to do on it though, so it was fair enough for me to take (even though it was a little less than i had hoped for....)

this past month with my jetta has been so costly that i absolutely had to get rid of it as soon as possible.

within two weeks, i had the oil sludge issue ($1500 to get back on the road), the turbo fried as a result of the sludge (woulda been $2000, but i didnt even bother to get this fixed), catalytic converter (luckily covered under an "extended warranty" to 80k that VW put on the part -- saved me $1500), and some other BS part that I paid $350 out of pocket for.

I'm still working with VWOA to get them to cover the $1500 for the oil sludge issue, but they're requiring proof of 100% of the oil changes i had over the life of the car. i can only document maybe 60% or so of them, so i'm definitely facing an uphill battle (especially if they find out i dumped the car already)....

i hope they end up covering it, but even it they dont, i almost dont give a $hit anymore....i'm just relieved that i no longer have to worry about that car....

I'm about 85 miles deep into my TSX though, and loving it so far

jesus, and i thought i had problems with mine....that's good to know, i may try to sell mine outright, but that's a great estimation on what I might be able to expect for mine as our cars are almost the same, but mine doesn't have the leather.

good luck with the TSX!!!!

cool -- yeah, you should be able to do quite a bit better w/o the body work that mine had and also the fact that i traded mine in. there was just no way i was going to sell this car private party given the troubles i was having with it.

good luck with whatever you choose....any questions along the way, lemme know!

Sounds like the history on my Passat. I added it up once and it had been in the shop over 20 times for things outside of scheduled maintenance. It started at three days old when the auto transmission was leaking fluid and continued up until 6 weeks ago when I had multiple seals and gaskets replaced due to burning oil. This list is long and painful but included ignition module, ABS module, doors that wouldn't open, all sorts of leaking fluid, coolant sensor, faulty gas tank and many more that I don't recall.

It was 7 years old with 103k miles on it and I got $4,600 in trade. I drove away in a TSX smiling, partly because of the new car but a lot of it was that I didn't have to deal with "the lemon" anymore.

isn't it crazy how unreliable these things are??

it's going to be great to hang out at this forum where the general population's biggest gripe is that the sunroof doesn't have one-touch opening

I also owned a '99 Passat and although it was "generally reliable", little things like the plastic interior (radio knob, door handles, etc.) started to crap out on me. What is up with VW? The Japanese definitely are giving the Europeans a scare nowadays. Unfortunately, Detroit is hanging on to life right now...
