It's a matter of choice, patience and compromises. My parents never had a mini-van, and the SUV we had at the time was no larger inside than the TSX (my dad used to like to take us camping and off-roading) and the other car was usually a Corolla. We all managed long road trips - and without DVD players, either. I know it's easy to say this now, but it's also comforting to know I grew up just fine and my parents don't have any back problems or other issues some of you seem to think will come from using the TSX as the "family hauler".

Most people wouldn't choose to have only one car, either, yet we've managed as a couple for 7 years with only one car even though sometimes it'd been more convenient to have 2. With a child on the way, we have to admit that, at some point, we may have to suck it up and get a cheap 2nd car (though we bought a house with a one-car garage).

I'm sorry for asking this, but what is it you must carry for a single baby that requires an SUV? Let's say you put the baby one side of the back row, you have the rest of this row and the trunk space for stuff.

I see people carrying their children all the time in their Civic's, Corolla's, Echo's. Why is it that people think they must get an SUV the moment they're expecting a baby?

Well technically, its not an SUV, its more of a hybrid. Aside from that I am a car lover, so any excuse I can find to get a new one, I usually take it. I also dont want to have to use the back seat for cargo after I fill up the TSX trunk with the stroller, bags and such. And thats just for a trip to the mall or something.

If I was going to visit relatives for the weekend, the trunk would be filled with the stroller and crib or whatever - and maybe a bab bag. The rest would have to be crammed in the back seat. Unless you have a second child of course.

I am not saying that it can't be done, but IMO it was not the best, or easiest way to go. Its just not a typical "family" car.

I'm in the market now for a TSX and will have my 8 YO and my 5 YO riding in it a couple of times per week. The 5 YO is in a booster.

We took both kids while test driving so that we could make sure we fit as a family in it. Sometimes we like to take the car instead of the Odyssey when we go out. Both kids fit just fine it it. My concern is for my 8 YO son in 5+ years. When he's 13 it might be tough for him in back on longer drives.

Now I have found that as my kids get older, they need less stuff when you go anywhere. No diaper bag, no stroller, no port-a-crib, no bouncer. To give you an idea, when our first was born we had a 91 Accord and a 93 Escort. We went on vacation for a week (2 hour drive) with a 6 month old and all our stuff in the Escort. Heck, we still the Escort for a few months after the second was born and they rode in it every day. Saying all that, the Odyssey is nice to have for vacations now. For swimming, gymnastics, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, cub scouts, etc. you don't need a huge car. Let the kid become a hockey goalie, well then you'll have a space issue.

I second the Legacy. I was pleasantly suprised when I drove the Legacy wagon. In GT form it's a hoot.

No one is saying that you can't survive with a decent sized four door sedan. When most of us were raised there wasn't SUV's or minivans so our folks had to get by with what they had. Station wagons were the only thing close.

We've been on vacation twice w/ our kid, once in our 2001 Jetta and the second time in the Honda Pilot and trust me, the Pilot is the way to go. The gas mileage is a little worse, but not much. And on the interstate you're not enjoying a sport tuned suspension anyway, in fact, the harsher ride gets old after the first couple of hours.

In the end, it's totally up to you. This is what discussion boards are all about - ask a question get some answers, some fact, some opinion but most if not all are valid answers from the people typing them in.

It always makes me laugh when I read about someone saying they can't have a TSX anymore because they have a kid or two. As if those two doors behind the driver and passenger were there just for decoration.

We travelled down to Florida last winter, we were four, all our luggage was in the trunk, and all of us were comfortably seated in the TSX. All of us were adults, my buddy and I do both over 230lbs 6ft+ and none ever complained we were out of space.

We really are going through a values crisis.

100% BUT, there are better family cars out there.

I have not read the entore thread, but I'll add my

My wife and I have had our TSX for 18 months and have had no issues bringing our 2 children along. My wife is about 5'10' and has no problem with the seat up slightly for our kids in the back. We have a son and daughter both 7 and 4 and they are comfortable in the back seat.

A TSX is more than fine for kids, ok for adults (backseat wise). If you want a sporty, luxurious car, the TSX is a fine choice.

Two great alternatives: The Mazda 6s with sports package (excellent in room, practicality, power, handling, looks) and the Subaru Legacy (a little more expensive, but the turbo 4 makes great power + a very nice interior).

Certainly I advise you to at leas test drive these cars with your wife and get a feel as to what suits you best.

I have 2 kids (5 months old and 22 months old). I've been debating whether the TSX is suitable as a family hauler. So far, the answer is YES. We have no trouble hauling all the 'stuff' that the kids require (double stroller, diaper bag, etc etc). Yes, its tight in the back seat, but its not like they're needing to run around back there. Getting them in and out of the seats isn't a big deal (it was when we had just one child - with the seat in the middle position). The only thing that would sway me towards a minivan is if we did alot of traveling from city to city - but the grandparents live in town. They have an Odessey - we borrowed it last summer for a trip to the Maritimes (13 hr drive). We filled that sucker to the brim with luggage and baby paraphernalia (BTW, i was curious about the definition of this word - Websters defines 1 : the separate real or personal property of a married woman that she can dispose of by will and sometimes according to common law during her life. 2 : personal belongings 3 a : articles of equipment. - I believe #'s 2 and 3 apply in this case, although it would have helped if she had 'disposed' of much of the stuff we had to lug for that week).
At any rate, I'd vote for the TSX if you don't have alot of city-city traveling to do, or if you can borrow one when needed.
We'll more than likely keep the TSX for a long time.

Like many others who posted replies, we too have a child (3-years old) and we also considered the TSX as a follow-up to our original family car which was a CR-V .

It was nice to not have to bend over to put him in the seat, and the ride was not too bad, especially after we installed the new wheels. It had enough room for everything you could ever need to take along, but I don't particularly like SUV's. My wife loved it. I would have rather had an Accord for about the same price.

We recently test-drove the TSX when we were looking for our TL. The main diferrence is the space between the baby seat and the front seats. It is very tight. We liked the fold-down seats, something the TL doesn't offer.

Ultimately it comes down to convenience/space. If you are willing to put up with the minor inconvenience of being a bit tight for a couple of years go for it. Eventually you get rid of all the extra play-pens and strollers and you wil have plenty left over space.

BTW, I admire the fact that you are not considering an SUV or minivan!

LOL my 3 month old loves to sleep in the tsx because of the bumps. But when she is in my accord she stays awake the whole time, I guess because its a much softer ride.

Been awhile since I searched, but there are older threads where people said car seats were snug but no problem....

Either that or my hopeful thinking is causing me to misremember!

Really you should look at the Accord. Very similar to the TSX but made much more family friendly with softer suspension, bigger back seats, and a slightly lower price.

Ditto. 6 months and counting for my daughter - usually falls asleep really quickly.

Well, the TSX is roomy enough for 2, and I really don't know how much room a kid takes haha, but I doubt he/she would take/need all the room in the car. I could also recommend the TL, which is pretty dang huge haha of course, its your pick! =D some of these recommendations up top are great as well.

I think the TSX is great for a family with a toddler but I don't think that it would be easy to get a small child in and out of the back seat. I find that sometimes, the rear doors don't allow enough room for a person to get in and out and I think that it would be tough to get a baby seat in there. However, go for a test drive and be the judge for youself!

If the TL is too pricey, perhaps looking into getting a 2004 TL that is slightly used. Those will typically go for the same as a brand new TSX. And as for the Accord, while it is bigger than the TSX, my sister has one (2003) and I don't see it being that much better for a child seat. Good Luck with the new addition.
