TSX with navi can it be tracked?

I was wondering if my TSX were to get stolen, could it be tracked since it has a GPS thing on it or would I need to get lojack? Was reading about how ppl's TSX were stolen, would hate that to happen to me

If you are that worried, get lojack regardless if it can be done (and no, it can't - GPS is receive only).

can't be tracked.
Once the car is recovered you should be able to pull the log from the navi to see where it's been but other than that, you're SOL.

Hmm, what if you leave your cell phone in the car. Im pretty sure those can be tracked via satellite?

Nope, not via satellite. Cell phones have nothing to do with satellites. Some cell phones have GPS that transmit their position, but if you really want your car to be tracked, buy a lojack and stop trying to cheap out.

nope. the navigation system is simply a radio RECEIVER. it transmits no data and makes no persistent connection to any server.

basically... the "Global Positioning System" is a constellation of 24 satellites that simply broadcast radio signals down to earth containing information such as speed, position, time, and velocity...

the navigation system in your car listens for those signals... and based on the information it receives from 2 or more satellites... it is able to accurately triangulate your approximate position.

additionally, your car, knowing its position at anytime... makes estimates on where its travelled by calculating information from your speedo, odo, and gyros. this is how the system knows your position even when it cant find 3 satellites. or when it can only find 2... and it has to estimate your position much more roughly.

none of these operations require your navigation system to "talk-back"

The only way the TSX can get stolen is with a key for that car, or with a tow truck.

The onboard Immobilizer is very effective. Personally, I have been installing alarms since 1986, and I would not put an alarm in our TSX unless we add aftermarket accessories.

Please note that a Lojack does not typically deter thieves... because if they know it's there, they try to disable it. Personally, I'll deter, but once it's stolen, I don't want it back, I want another.

Well, didnt someone on these boards have it stolen..but i guess that had nothing to do with anti-thieve components, but more of leaving the other key in the car

Well i dont think i have posted this yet on the forum, but my TSX was stolen about a month ago. They recovered the car in Newark, NJ with 3 bullet holes in the car! Apparently it was involved in a robbery and shooting.

The car sat in a tow yard for a week before they would even let me see it. It rained all week and the sunroof was left open and the back window was shot out, so needless to say there was 2 inches of water on the floor when i got to the car. i even found one of the bullets in the car!! One bullet went right through the driver's door and the driver was shot in the leg, even a little blood left on the seat. You could see where the police finger printed the car inside and out. But there were still 2 CDs in the changer that werent mine!! and a CD case in the center console.

Needless to say, my cell phone, digital camera, IBM thinkpad laptop and work bag with my check books were never recovered with the car...my life was in that car when it was stolen

The engine now runs like complete crap, they beat the hell outta the car. The damages are a little over 5 grand for repairs. I took a video of the car when i got it back, and will take some pics if ya'll wanna see'em... its not pretty...

Oh just wondering, I don't plan on upgrading my alarm system or anything. Thanks for the info though. I do plan on adding remote start to my stock alarm system, still looking into it though.

Dude, that sucks, Rog. Was it you or someone else that had the computer set up to run on the Navi??

And yes, if you're worried about the car getting stolen, then I would highly recommend the Lo/Jack.

The navi conversion kit was stolen though...i had JUST un-installed it to sell it to a friend, and left it in the trunk in a bag...needless to say it was gone as well. they probably dont even know what it is!!
