The initial oil in our cars is "break in" oil. It needs to be replaced at 3,750 miles. Then you go on the 5,000- 10,000 (depending on driving type) between oil changes.. 98% of drivers should change oil at 5,000 - 6,000 miles.

That doesn't match what the factory recommends.

The maintenance schedule can be found here: https://acurazine.com/forums/showpos...15&postcount=6

my dealership told me not to bother about servicing before 10000 miles and also there is no mention of 3750 miles for oil change. according to my copy of manual, it will be at 10000 miles only. however, if i get a red light for low engine oil before 10000 miles, i am not sure what to do.... i will take it to the dealer that day.

If you get a low oil light.....STOP THE F***ING CAR! I made that mistake with my old 93 celica. The light would go off when I accelerated, so I figured that it was ok to drive home that day. That was about a 50 mile journey. I only made it 4 miles before the engine could be heard over my cranked stereo. I now understand that warning lights are not to be taken lightly...unless you hate your car.
The good news was that I went from about 100 hp to 200 in a week. I went to a dealers auction and picked up a red 99 Prelude 5sp. This was my intro to Honda products. This car was fun while I finished college. I am sure that I would still have it if I didn't get sandwiched on the interstate. My TSX made up for that loss. Maybe the next car will be a TL? I might be pushing my luck now. Hopefully, the TSX lasts a while.

The initial oil in the TSX is "break in" oil. For that reason do not change it sooner than the factory recommended first interval (5K mi. under "severe" conditions or 10K mi. under "normal" conditions). I believe it is specifically mentioned in the manual to dissuade us from changing the oil after 500 or 600 mi. initially as some of us have been accustomed to doing in the past for break-in.

You should check your oil level periodically (I do it every fill up) and not rely on the "idiot" lights to tell you when its low. With Honda just the normal preventive maintenance will ensure a long lasting, well running, engine.

Aside from annoynace and expenses, are there any negatives to changing your oil too early?

none I can think of except washers and maybe stripping the plug threads.

Stripping the plug threads is actually a real problem when the plug didn't get torqued correctly. This includes the dealers, but more so for oil change shops. The dealers at least put on a new crush washers and lessen the chance of ruining the threads, but oil change shop often reused the same washer.

My friend bought his Integra brand new from the dealer and all services were done by the dealer. One day he brought his car in for routine maintenance and was told he has to pay for a new oil pan because the threads were stripped! Personally, I use a torque wrench for the drain plug.

Hmmm, I thought this whole idea of cars coming from the factory with "break-in" oil was a myth. I dont think they put anything special other then regular 5w30 for our car.

Off topic: tell me about your Comptech rear sway bar. Do you agree with others that this is one of the most cost effective mods to your TSX?

That's what the PM system is for.
