Tsx burn oil?
i was speaking to my dealer to get parts for my bros rsx, is car was burning oil, than it timing chain and tensioner went. So the dealer told me that they have been having an issue with rsx and tsx burning oil, and if you dont notice it, it can lead to timing chain snapping. He told me to watch my tsx too, cus they been getting at least 2 a month with this issue.
it could be the oil my bro was using for the winter was to thin, what oil do u guys use?

The timing chain tensioner is hydraulic. Thus, low oil = slack in the chain. This causes the chain to contact the gears in strange ways, stretch, and skip teeth. This may cause breakage but I have yet to hear someone's chain actually break. If you're running on low oil frequently due to burning, this is bound to happen.
I ALWAYS use 5w-30 since that is what Honda engineered my engine for. I don't use a drop, but if I did, I would frequently check the oil and look into rebuilding or swapping the motor.

My TSX can sometimes eat about a quart of oil over 5,000 miles. I check it semi-regularly to see if it needs any oil. This has been the case for the 32K miles I've been the owner and only driver (I bought it CPO @ 43K). I haven't noticed anything negative about it other than it makes the spark plugs black and could be wearing my O2 sensor prematurely.
I currently use 10W-30 AMSOIL synthetic to see if there's any less consumption from using a slightly heavier oil.

yea my bros just snapped. Now he has to change:
timing chain guide and tensioner left right and upper($111,$111,$31,$35,$85)
valve cover gasket $20
crank shaft seal $11
Spark plugs:$80
Apparently it happens frequently on tsx's

The k series (and most honda) engines are conflict engines. Thus, if the timing chain outright snapped, your bro's pistons smashed his valves in all likelihood. I'm sure he's got a lot more to fix than just what you listed.

Isn't this more of a problem for the 04-05 models? There was actually a member who had the dealership swap out his 04-05 block for an 06+ block because the oil burning exceeded the minimum amount of oil Honda said was normal.

Someone stole "My Garage"
From what I've read here and on other forums, and heard from my operations manager a few years ago, was that this was almost exclusively seen in very low VIN#, Canadian TSX's, all 2004 models. For example, my VIN ends in 800032, meaning I was the 32nd car off the line (8 stands for Canadian market). The new block was a 2006 shortblock (includes pistons, crank, etc) mated to my existing (and rebuilt a few thousand km's before) head.

I probably go through about a quart every 6-7K miles (my current oil change interval). I check it every 500-700 miles just to be safe, but have never had it get extremely low, so no timing chain issues.
I have a 2004, with about 80K on it. I've had this issue since I purchased it a few years back with 28K it. Luckily, I haven't noticed it using any additional oil as it gets older.

I have a question for those that are having to add oil, are you using synthetic? I'm just wondering if the seals are having issues with dino or synthetic.
I've been running synthetic in our F series Accords and they have still do not have an issue with burning oil at 140k miles.
On my TSX I run dino because I can't get over 5k miles without the MM wanting a change.

Changed over from dino at around 15k miles
Starting burning oil at around the 50k mark. I add 1/2-1 qt every 5k miles.

I've used Mobil 1 5w-30 since new in my 04 TSX with 125k miles. I usually need to add 3/4-1 qt every 2500 miles. As long as I check it regularly, I don't worry about it. I think the problem has something to do with the cylinder bores in the block not being completely round and the oil rings not sealing well.

I had approximately 600 miles left on my extended warranty when the timing jumped. Otherwise I'd be out $1k and not happy about Honda. My oil does always seem low to me and I attributed it to the VTEC. I'm running Amsoil 5-30. I never let it go below the low oil fill line as it seems to level off there. But if the tensior needs oil then maybe the low oil level line is to low?
I bought the extended warranty after reading about the AC compressors shearing off. I definitely came out ahead with this warranty purchase.
I think I have an early 2004 as it has the green lights around ignition switch.
Maybe I'll go up to a higher weight oil as well?
