From TOV: TL in 6th vs TSX in 6th

http://www.vtec.net/forums/one-messa...ge%5fid=205088

Just a quote, as its best you go there.

My suspicions were correct - time after time, the TSX simply walked away.
Before the TL guys get into an uproar. Note it was only in 6th gear. The TL would walk the TSX under any other situation.

Hmm, I guess the gearing of the TSX does have its advantages despite it not being perhaps as fuel efficient as it could be (if it were geared to churn out fewer rpms in 6th).

If we look at the gear ratios ...

TSX -> 0.66 6th * 4.7 final drive = 3.1
TL -> 0.77 6th * 3.28 final drive = 2.42

At 3100 rpms, the TSX is at or near max torque of 150 ft lbs to the wheels, * 3.1 = 465 ft lbs of torque.

In order for the TL to match that output it needs to produce 192 ft lbs at wheels. Also keep in mind the weight difference so realistically to start pulling as hard as the TSX the TL will need over 200 ft lbs of torque. I havent seen a TL dyno but obviously it doesnt have that kinda power.

So really what does it all mean? Nothing cuz the guy in the TL is just gonna gear down and smoke our asses

My thoughts exactly. Who does a run on the highway with someone in their top gear? If I'm going to run them, I drop 2 gears most of the time. I especially like doing this in the RSX. Most guys don't even know what hit them. Makes them think twice about my little Acura.

Wow......how did you come up with 465 ft-lbs of torque? Our K24 only makes 166 lb-ft of torque at the flywheel.

Is that a typo? :P

that "*" means multiply. apparantly, that's how you figure out torque to the wheels (mutlipy gear ratio by engine torque)

i guess, not sure about the validty of that, but that's how he got the number

Hee. Hee. No wonder I don't want to switch...

162 lb-ft * 0.84 (5th gear) * 3.94 = 536 lb-ft, plus the car weighs 300 lbs less = Weeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Yet another illustration (perhaps the clearest one yet) that our 6th gear is TOO F***ING SHORT!

I'm not sure what RPM the TL is at at 60 in 6th, but I think it does. So it must be the weight difference.

Wow. That's 180 lb-ft at the wheels even at 17-1800 RPM.

Does it really weight that much more?
