TL-S out, TSX in.... maybe

Hello Aziners, I am taking a look at a 2004 acura TSX black 6 speed MT with 55k miles. I dont think it has navi and not sure about type s. I am new to TSX's but like them a lot. The guy wants around $10k for the car. Since my TL-S was in accident this sunday and is totalled I need a new ride And this one seems like a good deal. I am going to look at the car tommarow (SAT) and had some questions:

1. What should I look out for when Test Driving this car.
2. What are the transmissions like for this make and model? hopefully not like 2g tls
3. Are there any recalls for this TSX?
4. Lastly I just looking for some honest advice and opinions about the TSX. I know they are pretty fast and get good gas milage. I am excited to hopefully stay in the acura community.

I wont have more pictures until tommarow of both the TSX and my TL-S, but will post in respect forums.

thanks!!

this car is fast enough for me, I simply just drove TOO fast everywhere in my TL-S and look what happened. My accord has a 2.4 auto and I am real happy with it. Anyways Iv been reading up on the 04 TSX and it seemes like an 05 or 06 is better then rolling the dice on an 04. But for $ 10 K maybe less is it still worth it?

it has been well documented that the 04s are the most likely to have any issues with them, ie the AC unit blowing up. im sure if you dug around the archives here you could find some more problems...try to find an 05 or 06 (seems to be the best year altho i have an 05 and nothing is wrong with it)..tell the guy you'll pay $8.8k if he's looking to sell he'll take it if he knows whats good for him

I think a lot of people with 04's will defend the issues aren't so severe that it should deter you from buying, but the AC unit stands out and might be worth checking on. The 05 and06 pick up some options that a lot of folks seem to like. I'm sure it won't be long before someone who has them memorized lists them. To your questions:

1. Nothing special over what you'd look out for any car
2. My recollection is that the transmission of the TSX gets a lot of compliments
3. Not an expert
4. I think you will find the bottom line on the TSX is that it's good at just about everything but not great at any one thing. It's real draw is that it's an outstanding balance of fun, economy and quality. It's easily one of the most well-rounded cars out there. I love my 06, and even after 4 years I still enjoy getting into it just like the first day I brought it home.

You may get some 04 defenders, but from what I've read on these forums over the years....., I wouldn't touch an 04 on a bet. Spend a couple of thousand more and find yourself an 05. I've got and 05 and an 07, and though you may read about how many more features the 06, 07, and 08's have, I'm actually pretty fond of my 05 (and have little use for most of the later model upgrades). You should be able to find one at a pretty good price and they don't seem to suffer from most of the maladies that seem to plague some of the 04 model year cars. I've got 115K miles on mine and it has been for the most part trouble free. I love it and will probably buy another one (and as a comparison, I've never put more than 40K miles on a car before I've lost interest).

Problem free '04 here. For a few hundred bucks, I got an iPod adapter, bluetooth and XM which are the goodies the 05s and 06s get you. My aftermarket bluetooth actually has a better interface than the factory. The only 04's I'd get a good check on are the low VIN numbers. And I don't say shy away from them, but look for those problem areas that a small percentage of 04 owners have reported before you buy. Best of luck.

A car that cheap throws up a big red flag. That flag reads "Wrecked!"

Agreed. If nothing else, try to find out why he's selling it on the cheap.

I've got a black on black,6-speed,with navi,'04 with 60k miles and haven't had any issues yet.Granted I've only owned it for about 7 months and only put 3k miles on it. I bought mine certified pre-owned. All recalls and bullentins were done by the time I got the vehicle. I shelled out $16,900 for mine. Every vehicle has its issues. My wifes 07 Civic is great. My previous 08 Si sedan was a rattle can. Just before you buy any vehicle have it checked out by a qualified technician. Good luck to ya.

Actually, it occurs to me that $10K for a 6 year old TSX without NAV (and a 6speed to boot; sorry guys, but much harder to sell) w/55K miles is no super duper deal after all (not here in Mass. anyway). I would guess that's about what's it worth. I still say cough up another 2 grand or so and find an 05. Hell, I'd probably let you have mine for that (more miles and it's an automatic, but it already has a Progress rear bar, Koni yellows that lower it just right, tint, and it's just about perfect).

the guys needs a bigger car, hes got kids and a TSX is on the small side and its not wrecked. simba is right the car is priced about right, or priced to sell! The test drie went well, looks like ill be getting it if everything goes as planned. I was look at new years but the cars are more than i want to spend cause this car (2004) goes for about $ 11-14k and 05, 06 goes 14k++++ and that more than i want to spend.

Heres a like to my wrecked TL pics:

04 6 spd w/ 55k miles (if clean title and everything is good) for 10k is a STEAL. even if it may not be a steal to you it's definitely a great deal. i'd jump on it if i were looking for a car. sorry to hear what happened to your tl but maybe it was a blessing in disguise?

would it be worth it to do a carfax on it? would be nice to know if there was some of knowing what service it had done on it and if some things were fixed by the dealer: TSB's (A/C unit, etc).

also, has he had the rotors resurfaced, stock pads, stock tires or new parts? if he's still on stock, check how it brakes at 60-70MPH and if you get vibrations in the steering wheel. these are the most likely things that would need to be replaced within the first year of you having the car at 55Kmi. brakes, rotors, and 4x tires, you're looking at $1500 at least (assuming you're paying someone to install them).

I don't pay or trust anyone for do my car maintinence. That the luxury of having a 3 car garage and a crap load of tools. Anyways its looks like ill have this car late next week. I have a clean carfax and acura dealer service records. Also the final price is $9500 and the car has 53k miles. The car does need ac work but that it. The guy just needs to get rid of this car. I'm really just waiting for him to get the title before we move forward. I'm excited about this car and can't wait. Pictures will be posted ASAP in the photo section.

i live in monroeville, soon will be moving to the south hills. Im getting this TSX today!!!! I ran into a bunch of set backs but i got an appt @ 12 TO GET THIS DEAL DONE. for a second i didnt think i was getting this car so i looked at the following rides just in case in had to leave the acura family.

03 Nissan 350z 49k $10500
01 Audi A6 2.8 88k $6700
04 Audi A6 3.0 75k $12500

i test drove all of them and they were very nice rides but in the end i believe the 04 TSX with 53K was the best deal for $9500.
