tips on reducing road noise on the highway

i'm usually a little above the speed limit on the highway. the road noise gets annoying, especially when i have to speak up in order to talk to passengers. is there anything we could to reduce it?

Easiest thing to do is buy new tires - the less sporty the better if you're interested in reducing noise. Other than that, there's ripping up the carpet and getting more insulation installed - if this is even possible.

Put ruberized asphault on the bottom of the car and on the metal panels in the wheel wells. You can also stuff some insulation in your doors. I did both these on another car and it helped a bit.

The TSX is one of the quieter cars on the road, so it may take quite a bit to deaden it more. You'll aslo be adding weight to the car.

IMO the TSX is not the quietest car, Lexus cars are much quieter. Even a Camry is quieter, and the current generation TL. That said, there is something sporty about a car that's not totally isolated from the road. I feel more connected to the road driving a TSX than a TL because I can hear more from the road and engine.

Ride in an Integra type R at 80 MPH and tell me if the TSX is loud.

I'll have to admit that the audi's I've rode in do seem quiet. However, my while in my friends 1.8 A4, it seems louder than my TSX. Keep in mind I even have CAI.

My TSX is by far the quietest car I've owned. I can actually listen to classical music at a reasonable volume while doing 80 MPH.

The TSX decybell ratings surpassed audi. Also are very close the new RL which has the noise canceling device.

Easy solution. Use earplugs. Try it on a long freeway ride and you will always use it.

I use the plastic cone reusable ones found at Lowe's. BTW, I have a Mazda6.

Since it's road noise, replacing the tires with better ones would be the easiest solution. Not to mention the improved performance. Go check out Tirerack and you will see how poorly the stockers are rated.

I have an 04 with Cascade Audio sound damping in the doors. I just had an 05 loaner, and the difference in road noise was noticeable. I recommend VMAX (available at Parts Express).

Also, window tint cuts noise thru the glass...

^^ I second eldude's recommendation. I put Vmax in my doors and the car is quieter, but not like a Lexus. Its the tires. If you want a quiet car then:
1) put sound deadening in the wheel wells
2) put Vmax in the doors (front is good, all 4 is better)
3) get quieter tires (may I suggest Avon 500)

Yeah, best solution is to opt for quieter tires. It seems as though Honda has really improved on cutting the noise originated from the TSX's engine bay, while Audi 's A4 engine bay noise is pretty loud. On the contrary, A4's road noise is very low, while the TSX seems to be lacking the right insulation for the latter.

Hi, can explain about the sound deadenning in the wheel wells?
What is needed, where to get it from? Any web link?

I think the tires contribute most to the road noise. So, if you soundproof the wheel wells you should be able to cut down on road noise inside the cabin. I haven't done it but I've heard about products that you can apply to the inside of the wheel well to give it more sound insulation. Sorry, no link. You just have to make sure its flexible and that you don't cover the clips.

I recently put Vmax in the front doors. I spent some time on the highway this past weekend and, although the Vmax helped, at 70-80MPH the car is still too noisy.

*&%$#@ tires.

The reason I said replacing the tires is the "easiest" solution because you don't have to do any work or spend additional money on other sound insulation products (unless you want to). If the stock tires are still new, then just sell them after you got the new tires.

I have never been in the Type-R's but I have to say that the S2000 probably has that beat! Can't hear the radio over 80mph, can't talk on a phone over 50mph. And that is with the top up!

Im pretty sure most of the roadnoise is actually translated into the cabin through the suspension components. Quiet tires are the best way to reduce roadnoise.

I did see in the "Sustainable Sedans" comparison that the TSX is quieter than the A4. If you want a quiet ride, buy a new Grand Cherokee.
