Thinking of Buying a Used 2006 TSX- Some Questions

Hey guys,

I used to own a 2003 3.2 Cl Type S and I loved it...now my girlfriend is looking to buy a TSX. 2006 because its a tad cheaper and pretty similar to the 07 and 08.

Someone is offering a TSX for $13,500 with the nav (technology package) with 76k miles. They said no accidents and supposedly the car is mint, with service records.

Are there any major services due shortly after the 76k? When is the next major service and how much does that cost and what does it require?

Any reasons not to get a TSX with 76k miles? Higher mileage is the only reason it works in her price range.

Anything in particular to look for when checking out the car in person?

Own a 06 tsx. At approximately 100k miles had spark plugs replaced, coolant and manual transmission fluid change. It now has almost 152k miles, great car.

Major service is kind of a relative term, and there actually is no "major service" for a TSX. Starting in 06, the car has a maintenance reminder system that has a set of codes to alert you to required maintenance. That said, I can give you some guidelines based on the 04-05 hard copy (owner's manual) intervals. At the 06's age (and mileage), the following above average services should have been performed by now:

Brake fluid: replace every 3 years regardless of mileage
Cabin and air filters: every 2 years or 30K miles (I replace them every year)
Transmission fluid: 6 years or 120K miles (many, including me, tend to half that)
Plus whatever regular maintenance items are called for (oil and filter, tire rotations, etc.)

There are also a series of checks and inspections that are called for at various service intervals. If you do buy the car, the full maintenance schedule (codes) is in the owner's manual. There are a few things that are not coded in the maintenance reminder system (the 3 year brake fluid interval, wiper blades, brakes, for examples)). If the car still has the OE battery, I'd suggest replacing it immediately (Honda batteries are a known weak spot). The engine (the 4 cylinder) has a timing chain (versus the Honda V-6, which uses a timing belt), so there's no maintenance/replacement interval for that (though a few have had to replace it, and some do it as a "feel good" measure). Same goes for the water pump. There was a power steering hose recall that should have been performed also. 76K miles is pretty low mileage in my opinion. I just sold my 05 with 178K miles on it, and my wife's 07 is at around 180K now. We've has zero problems with both. The cars are pretty bulletproof with good maintenance.

I have an '06 with Nav at about 101,000 miles and have had no major problems. It's a great car and I have averaged 28 mpg over the life of the car so far. I probably do more highway driving than city driving, but I have been very pleased with the total cost of owning this car.

My 06 with Navi has about 98,000 miles and it has been routine maint according to the M.I.D. schedule, 2 sets of tires, new battery, replaced two map light bulbs, a couple of windshield wipers, cabin air filter every year, same front brakes, replaced back brakes at 35,000 miles (about 30% on both pads now), turned the rotors at around 80,000 miles. I use Mobil 1 oil since first oil change, clean the K/N drop in filter every spring, flush the brake fluid once, and change the 5AT oil every 30,000 miles.

I am about due for my +100,000 mile service in a few months. I expect to keep this car until +150,000 miles and maybe up to 200,000 miles (planning on give the car to my son when he starts driving next year). I have zero worries driving this car.

The TSX is a damn great car with any amount of mileage!

Its a really good car - no major problems. What seems to be somewhat consistent, though, is that the motor mounts get really soft at around 100,000mi / 160,000km. Still drives great but might get on your nerves if it has a manual transmission. Replacement of the mounts is optional.
