Lightbulb Tank on Empty

I'm not sure if this is a repost or not but I thought the TSX page on Tank on Empty was kind of cool.

How far have you gone with the light on?

I don't think anyone would want to risk it and jeopardize their engines. Triple A takes too long to come. When they do, they probably use cheap gas.

There was a thread somewhere talking about what is the most you filled up with.... I know I've personally done a ~15.5 gallon fillup... nothing special.

As an FYI, our fuel pumps are internal (as are a lot of Honda/Acura pumps) and the fuel actually help to cool the pump, so running it low isn't a great habit.

Price of premium gas (average) = $4.06
Price of a new fuel pump = hundreds, perhaps thousands of $s
Living down the shame of burning up a fuel pump to see "how far can you go?" = PRICELESS
A few of the top stories are from people who ran their tanks dry -- stupid. Another article about how the fuel pump is cooled by the residual gas in the reserve well -- the gist of that, "using that gas, stupid."

Furthermore, the metrics -- "how far have you gone" -- are impossible to compare with a control case, since the TSX mileage can vary from 16 MPG to 34 MPG, depending on driving technique and road conditions. So, using "how far have people gone on "(E)?" to gauge how far YOU can go -- stupid.

I read in another thread hearsay advice that if you fill up when your tank is more than 1/2 full, you get "more gas" since there's less room in the tank for the swirling gas being added to turn to vapor which is reclaimed by modern pump spigots. I'm skeptical of that advice, as I tried that same post's advice to fill up at the slower flow rate ... and added enough gas supposedly to compute to 24.4 MPG when the MID estimated 28 MPG, i.e the pump probably added more gas than indicated ... yes, at a station and pump I've used before.

If gas actually cools an in-tank pump, then what cools an in-line pump (external) when both pumps have identical internal design?

Again flow of fuel through the pump cools the internal components. Kinda like the water going through a garbage disposal cools it.

That's exactly my point. The pump doesn't need fuel flowing around it for cooling but it doesn't hurt either. We've had this same discussion a few years back.

I've heard this bit of nonsense spouted before too. The thing that always gets me is how much liquid gas do these people think it takes to fill a particular volume with vapor (at 1 atmosphere of pressure)? I'm sure they believe the number to be something like 3:1 where in reality it's a huge ratio (that I don't know). Yes gasoline is volatile but it's not like it instantly flashes from liquid to gaseous form. If you want to do a simple experiment, put a small amount of gas in an open container and see how long it takes to evaporate. The change in volume of the liquid after 5 minutes is approximately the maximum you could expect to loose to vapor reclamation while you fill you're tank.

::Spoiler:: Hardly any.

EDIT: I found that the actual fuel pump is located within this external housing seen below and has the suction point just at the bottom. So I guess the fuel offers no cooling properties to the external housing since the housing won't actually conduct heat from the internals (ie the case isn't part of the pump cooling properties)?

Which part is the external housing? Doesn't the whole pump assembly drop into that round opening on the top of the gas tank?

The TSX has a 17.1 gallon tank. I think the most I've put in at a fill up was around 16 gallons. My very conservative assumption is that the light comes in with just over 3 gallons left in the tank which means that I can safely go 75-100 miles after the light comes on before needing to fill up.

All of #37 drops into the tank except #38 which is the lid and seal.

I never even come close to being empty. I almost always fill up at 1/4 of a tank left. I believe I've only had the fuel light in the TSX come on once.

Back in high school when I'd borrow my parents' cars, I used to get so pissed at my dad because he'd never fill up the tank, so when I'd turn on the car, the fuel light would already be on. Not cool.

well i was in downtown Vancouver..off from work.. it's about a 26km drive
back home for me 1 way.

So the moment i pulled out of the parkade, BANG.. i'm at 0km range. I wanted
to fill up at the 'HUSKY' gas station near my home which was 26km away.

So i risk it.. jump onto the highway and keep it at a steady 100km/hr.

Now, in cdn, the size of the tsx tank is 68L. I did about 27km after 0km range
and requested a FULL fillup. Once the gas stopped pumping, it showed that I
filled up 56.x L. Which tells me that i coulda easily done at least another 100km if my 'average' fuel econ is 9.6L/100km.

lol.. make any sense?!

IIRC my 2006 gives me something like 50 miles on the "RANGE" indicator when the "(E)" light is on solid. So I think it's factoring in at least some of the reserve. I set my trip odometer anyway, an habit I picked up in my Jeep. With 3 gallons in there, I could go 75 miles, but wouldn't want to try.

But I've only had the "E" light on twice. I usually fill up by the half-tank mark.

I've never put in more than 56 litres (14.9 G), and the needle was well below E.

Agreed - I have experienced the same. The most I have ever driven past 0-range was 50 miles. I usually try to get 400 miles from each tank of gas.

We have 17 gallon tank? i thought it was sixteen. I usually figure i can go about 50-80 more miles after the light goes on, witch it usually goes on at about 25-30 miles left in the range calculator.

I dont like my car telling me when to put gas, im in control damn it. I guess i can push it even further now that i have that extra gallon
