I've never heard of being able to do that. And why would you want to anyway?

He brought up a good point...I drive alot and I want to change my oil while on the freeway....I guess i'll just set the cruise to 70, remove the key, pop the hood, climb out the sunroof, and throw a couple quarts in. Seems safe, right? Good times.

The whole point of having the key is to be able to operate the vehicle. Without the key, the vehicle should not work. If you can drive the car without the key in the ignition, then it wouldn't take much for someone to steal your car then.

on my 87 civic you can put the car into neutral while moving turn off the motor and take out the keys. man talk about no lock-outs back in the day.

most car you can shit to N and stop the engine pul the key out, put it back then start engine, shit to D and keep going, this is used mainly for testing, reduce moving part to isolating noise sources. and dangerous for morden car because you lost braking and steering power. however, i don't think you can pull the key out while driving; it would result in a recall by Honda!!

why the hell would you ever do that?!?!?

anyway, if you needed something out the glovebox, you should wait until the car is stopped anyway - keep your eyes on the ROAD!

I wouldn't try it, but in my first-gen Mercury Sable, I could pull the key out whenever I wanted. Heck, I could start the car without a key by turning the cylinder with my hands! Fortunately no one ever wanted to steal that car (although I wish somebody would've). I don't think that was how it was supposed to work, though.

I thought our keys had transponders in them anyway so that if someone copied the key they still wouldn't be able to start the car....who knows...thread is still a little weird.

I owned a 1983 Chevy S-10 5spd and was able to take the key out while I was driving. The key was warped and that was why I was able to do this.
