SUV curiosity

Kinda off topic, but a little curious...

Why do the Acura MDX, Lexus GX470 AND LX470 not have HID's? Now I have thought about it, and headlamp unit height is a possibility (the Infiniti QX56 has pretty low headlights, with Xenon). However, the MDX and GX are about the same height as the X5 and ML. So, what's the reasoning? Are Honda's engineers true in saying they don't have the technology yet?

I don't know about the Lexus SUVs, but the MDX never had Xenons from day 1, even though the TL and RL already had Xenons. Probably was a cost-cutting move.

I always thought that SUVs don't/shouldn't have HIDs because they are so high up they would blind oncoming traffic with them

I thought that HID's were an option on the MDX?? Maybe just "projector" style, but not HID??

They are available in the RX330 with autoleveling (and even turn with the steering wheel in one package).

Doesn't the Cadilac Escalade have HIDs. I was reading the Owners Manual and it talks about them.

I think a few GM SUVs do have HIDs..they are the exception not the rule. I think they are aimed VERY low when stock though.

Perhaps at a certain height, you're not allowed HIDS? I know the BMW X5 and Lexus RX330 have them, so it can't be that all SUVs aren't allowed HIDs. Hell, the BMW even has bi-xenons.

Here is a Consumer Reports article on HIDs:

Consumer Reports Article

I think for SUVs auto-leveling should be mandatory if they have HIDs

Im pretty sure that the current GX (the LX470 as well) offers them, and I know for sure that for the 04' MDX update the HIDs were offered.

I don't understand why everyone gets all hard over HID's. I could care less. My Z had them and I thought they did a good job but nothing worth buying a car over. I'd just as well have power seats, seat heaters, xm, bigger wheels, etc. Hell I think I'd just as well have an auto diming rear view mirror.

I think 90% of the people that love them just love them because "they look cool". If you want the feautre just go and buy some of those cheap ones from autozone.

They do look cool. If I didn't want to look cool, I would go buy a 3 year old off lease Taurus or Malibu and save a crap load of money.

If I am spending $40K on an SUV it better look cool.

And the fact the HID's definitly are brighter. I wasn't "into" them until I got the TSX. Then when my wife wanted a new SUV, HID's were manditory.

if u live in the boondocks and drive at night like some of us, hid's are mandator. I have had piaa's on my civic for quite some time and they honestly weren't bright enough for me especially when driving in areas where there are no lights and no traffic. I sprung for HID's on my civic, no autozone doesn't carry them =P, and they made a HELL of a difference.

Yes they are now mandatory for all the cars I will purchase from the future.

I can't wait until my TSX arrives!

Everyone should read the consumer reports article. It basically says that some are good and some are not. The best lights were on a Mazda Protege!

What I found on the Z was that the side of the roads were lit up better. It does help when you live in the boonies but I hope those lights don't attract deer. Like I said, I like them but they wouldn't influence me enough to buy or not buy a car.

I guess everyone has different opinions what is important which is fine.

TSX without HID = IS300 without sunroof = 2006 Accord without LED taillight = TL without $3000 off and extended warranty = Focus without TSX-wanna-be-handling = 91 Camry without breaking apart = G20 without your butt still in it
