Suicide Hill (Baxter and Fargo Street)
The past weekend, I was going up suicide hill (Fargo or Baxter street) in LA and shifted from 1st to 2nd in manual. The car did not engage in 2nd half-way up since the hill has a 33 percent incline (http://www.flickr.com/photos/14333100@N06/3359493289/). The steepest street in LA. So I was revving didn't realizing that the gear was not engaging but did not redline. I was smoking in the back. What may cause the smoke and did I damage the engine in any way? I'm not sure it was lugging since I wasn't in gear. I don't think I was since I was not moving in 2nd. Did anyone went on suicide hill on their TSX?

I was told not a lot of people really knows those streets anyways in LA. I might not get too much of a response. I was climbing the hill on my TSX that has a 33 percent incline to it. Halfway up the hill, I shifted to 2nd gear but the car was not accelerating and started to burn smoke behind the car. Not sure if the hill was too steep that the car's computer chip could not react quick enough to drive in 2nd and was burning smoke. I was wondering if anyone with a manual had an experience where there was smoke coming from behind the car going uphill. After I climbed over the hill, I can still smell the burned smoke for an hour or two in my car. I was just wondering if that was bad for the engine or what may cause that.

If it's a manual transmission car, the car should shift for you. The burning smell would then be your tires (if you have the oem tires). I actually drove on some of those steep roads in that area (silver lake/echo park) a few months ago. My TSX (6MT) couldn't make it up the road because it couldn't gain traction in the rain. I got up the road a little, upshifted, and started losing traction. I slammed on the brakes, and my car slid backwards a foot or so. I just went in reverse and took a different road.
I would expect the smoke to come from the front tires if it was losing traction (6MT). If it's coming from the back (especially when going uphill), it might be coming from the muffler. Having an engine smoking is not a good sign. Maybe your fluid levels are low, and being on a steep road caused part of the engine to become starved?
