Thumbs down Spoilers on 4-Door Sedans? Please Stop!

I just had to post this after reading a different thread. I'm sorry, but putting any spoiler other than a subtle "lip spoiler" on a 4-door sedan looks sooooo gay! Nothing can make a classy 4-Door Sedan look more "plastic" than a spoiler sitting 3" off the trunk. Seeing all of these spoilers on Pontiac Grand Prix/Am's, Ford Taurus', etc... these days just makes me laugh, it looks terrible.

There are lip spoilers on ebay for $39, pick up one of those, take it to Macco and they will match your car color for about another $40. You will thank me for it when people are not laughing at you at every stoplight.

It's a 4-Door Sedan! The key word is "sedan". It's not a coupe or a high performance machine, it's a 4-Door Sedan. I am not a huge spoiler guy to begin with, but I do like a subtle lip spoiler on most cars. This is not only for the TSX, but for every 4-Door sedan in the world, BMW's included!

Thanks, I just had to vent... I feel much better now...

I don't completely agree. There are some sedans that look nice with spoilers. For example, the last two generations of Maximas looked blah without a spoiler. I do think the TSX looks nice with spoilers, but I also think it has a more classy and refined look without it.

With the TSX, I think it could go either way, but I prefer it without.

Now, I seen a few Beemers and A4s around town with spoilers. I think the drivers of those cars should be pulled over and ticketed for ruining the beautiful lines of those cars with glued on spoilers.

I agree with Darth62. Buff-Daddy is too extreme.. It really depends on what car you are driving. Some cars look nice with the spoilers such as Accord, TSX, Mazda 6 etc. However, I don't think BMW or Audi A4 should get spoilers. My TSX has the OEM rear spoiler and it looks just cool. I prefer to have it!

I agree, I think the spoiler is in most cases an afterthought from the manufacturer. They always put an spoiler as part of a "sport package" that more often than not offer not icreased performance other than a higger price. I got a G35 6spd sedan and I passed on the spoiler, even though they claim to achieve o lift in the back with it. How fast do I need to drive for it to make a difference? I don't even like spoiler on coupes either. If the car is well designed it does not need additional plastic to look good.

I agree with Buff. Wings and spoilers serve no purpose on a non-race car other than to ruin its lines and make it look silly, IMO. Sedans look really ridiculous with them.

Disagree, as long as it's not the "high wing" metal spoiler, it still looks nice on TSX. The OEM spoiler looks nice to me.

Yet, I don't see how "spoiler on sedan" and "gay" goes together?
Why ppl always have to put "gay" to things they don't like? Some one on the forum once said AT TSX is for gay, why? If you said TSX is a Sedan anyway, why 6 speed MT?

Stop attacking ppl with "that's so gay" when they prefer AT or Spoiler.

Accord? Nothing screams "family sedan" like an Accord and therefore nothing is further from needing a spoiler than the trusty family sedan. To each his own I guess, but I'm still going to laugh when I see mom with 2 carseats and a spoiler...

Sport sedans - small spoilers like OEM or aftermarket lips are OK.
Family sedans - shows the owner made a mistake in what he/she bought.
Huge airfoils and wings on any street car is a joke.

PS - If I don't have a spoiler, does that mean I'm straight? I don't have a spoiler and I have a manual - I must be confused.

Thumbs up

I'm with you man...the spoiler doesn't match this car's lines. I'm not impressed with the acura spoiler and the aftermarket ones I've seen aren't any better.

Spoilers do spruce up some, but TSXs look way better clean on the rear end...ha ha ha

I agree a few sedans look good with a spoiler. The Maxima is a perfect example of this. The Accord is another, although with or without the spoiler that car looks terrible in the back. The Mazda 6 looks good, but it's overdone anyway. That's about it I think.

I don't think the spoiler on the TSX looks good.

I agree mostly. Some sedans do look better with a regular spoiler, but with the TSX, it looks best with a lip spoiler.

The OEM spoiler does two things:

1. Houses an LED brake light that activates faster than incandescent bulbs, which gives an additional 10ft of braking room for the guy behind you at highway speeds. Not to mention it's brighter and more visible. (I wish the TSX had built-in LED's like the TL and G35).

2. Shows you exactly where the back of your car is when reversing.

Ok, not exactly sporty, but useful.

Just milli-second quicker. It won't do shit!!!

I have to disagree on the generalization of the "spoilers on 4-door sedan is gay" comment. Like many have said, some sedans look good with a factory spoiler on.

About 100 milliseconds actually. 100 km/h = 28 m/s. So 2.8m, about 10ft.

I think the wide variety of responses here shows that spoilers on sedans are a personal preference. My own opinion is that they look ok sometimes, though I generally think cars look better without them.

Some spoilers lower the Cd of the car. Some increase downforce only at speeds of like 150mph+. Most all are cosmetic.

I like some on some cars, like lip spoilers on BMWs. The LEgend had a nice spoiler. I liked the big spoiler on my GS. I agree, spoilers on Camrys/Accords/Corollas are clearly for cosmetics only, which is cool.

The STi spoiler is f'n atrocious!!!!

The riceboys rule the Subaru design division.

The pink "STi" stickers on the fog light covers are even more shameful.

i have a spoiler on my indigo blue TSX. when i was choosing cars, it came down to the altima 3.5, or the tsx. the altima was faster than the accord coupe, huge and good styling, but i just liek the smoothness of the TSX. i told the acura dealer to put on mud guards, spoiler and some minor parts for free and i would be it. so i get it with a spoiler. but i really really like the sleek look of TSXs without spoilers, it makes it look like a tougher 4 door car, instead of the 4 door with the spoiler. i would like to remove it, except for the fact that there would be holes in my trunk where it was. if anyone has any suggestions of what i could do now or in the future to alter my cars accessories cleanly, please tell me. ive considered lookin for a CF trunk and hood, except all the parts for the TSX are so damn expensive

buff is exactly right I mean I look at the TSX with the ugly spoliers that sit like rice rockets that really ruins it. The rear lip spoliers look more classy and sporty at the same time, they cant be overdone

I have the OEM spoiler on mine too and I like it very much. I will get the OEM body kit as soon as I have saved enough money for it! The OEM spoiler is designed for the TSX and it goes smoothly with the line of TSX. I do recommend to have it!

To sell STi's???

You could know exactly what it is for and still think it's ugly.

I think the whole spoiler thing depends on the car, whether it be a coupe or sedan or whatever. I've seen wings on suv's & minivans, now THAT should be against the law.

Maybe I need to get out more but can someone please tell me what the purpose is of those wings that look like an erector set? It looks completely idiotic.

i have an OEM wing and actually think its nice.
Although i would have liked a lip spoiler better. The brake light and the acura etching on the OEM spoiler are pretty cool.
Yes I agree to an extent with its ineffectiveness. But i think cosmetically its nice.
And BLah to each his own.
My car doesnt look ricey and thats whats cool to me.
Cant wait to drop it right.

Do you think the spoiler looks bad on this car ? It's OEM for that model. I think it looks pretty good. But then again, it is my car.

It's a 4-Door sedan with a soiler, so yes, I think the car would look better without it.

I think this thread would be better without your whinning about spoilers. We all didn't purchase them thinking it would somehow improve our performance, we bought them because it is to our liking. If you don't like it fine, but calling something "gay"... grow up!!

Seems like the whole point of this thread is to whine about spoilers, so maybe this is the place to whine.

I just had to post this after reading a different thread. I'm sorry, but putting any spoiler other than a subtle "lip spoiler" on a 4-door sedan looks sooooo gay!
I agree. It looks so stupid. The same goes for foglights turned on on daytime. Moronic behavior.
