spare keys?

I usually have about 4 keys per car. Just wondering if anyone has ordered a couple of spare keys for thier TSX. How much were they and did the car have to be dropped off for programming?

If it needs to be left with the service department, I'll just order the spares before I take delivery friday.

Well I keep 4 cars at home. Sometimes they need to be moved around to get out a car. For example a NSX, R6, and Civic are always garaged. A Tahoe and Accord park on the driveway. If my parents need to move something, chances are they wont find a key to move my car unless I place it on a key rack.

So if you're using one key and the other sits on the key rack, wouldn't that be sufficient? Why would you need 4 keys?

But if you are still set on getting a spare, it would run around $150 and you have to bring the car in along with ALL your other keys so they can be coded the same. Otherwise, the other keys won't work anymore after the spare is made.

I remember asking my dealer for spare keys when I first got my car and from what I can remember he said that the TSX only comes with two keys and a valet key and they won't make spares for it.

Said if I was to lose a key they would have to re-install all the locks on it and give a new set of keys...

but you DON'T have to bring in all the keys. I got a spare made when I had my autostart put in and didn't bring in all the keys. Took my dealer about 20 minutes but I think it was only that long because they were working on other cars.

I might consider giving my GF a key. That leaves none on the rack if we are both out. I would carry valet + main key since I go out often. I carry all my car keys on one keychain. House and businesses keys on another chain.

I also like to have a spare key for the car at work. Ive lost my keys in all kinds of places. Running in the park, pickpockets, mall. I just like to have spares around in different places in case I lose one. I can get access to another key and move the car before someone else who found the key gets to test drive it.

if you go the eBay route, I believe there is a way that you can program the key yourself. I saw this on the TL board, which I assume is the same for the TSX. Try and search over there.....its seemed pretty simple with it only being a sequence of turning the key and hitting the remote buttons or something like that.

I think I'd be more nervous knowing I had four spare keys floating around in the world- do you do a daily inventory?. Especially at $150 a pop, I think I can keep track of the 'free' keys I got with the car. On a side note, if you are using the valet key so often- I hope you realize that it only gives you protection from thieving criminals if you go through the process and lock the trunk through the glovebox- oh yeah, and lock the glovebox. I think having 4 spares is a little extreme as others have mentioned.

I am pretty sure the manual says you are supposed to keep the Acura key seperate from other keys. Something about how the metal could screw up the chip in the Acura key.

really??? not that I keep them together but that would be slightly upsetting only becuase it says something about the fragility of the chip...

I don't think it's fragile, just simply how the technology works. I believe the Acura chip is a magnetic coupled transponder system so you don't need a power source in the key for it to function but may be subject to interference from the presence of metal other than the key it self.

Have you tried your other keys to make sure they will start the engine? It may not be 100% required to bring in all keys, but at least they can verify if the coding is correct, as all keys need to match the immobilizer and the ECU. I was told they can verify all the keys at the time when the spare is made free of charge. However, if my other keys didn't work because they weren't available to be verified, they will have to charge me again for going through the key matching process later.

I seriously doubt you can program a TSX key yourself as it requires the HDS tool for code matching the immobilizer and ECU. You might be able to get the key cut and use it to unlock the door, but you won't be able to start the engine. I think you are referring to programming a "keyfob".

Once again you're right JTso!

I just searched again for the thread and couldn't find it but as soon as you mentioned it the light came on and I realized what I read.

you can get FOB of eBay and program it, it's not too hard. as for key, you must have dealer or some key dealer enable the key and they are expensive...

i bought a set of key for 04 TL which has a matching FCC#, but perhaps due to the memory seat issue, they don't work as they shall. i am only able to get TL mem2 working...

I took delivery of my car today from the salesman. He explained all I needed was my key # to get a duplicate key. Didnt need to drop off the car for programming, but if he were wrong I would get a loaner while they did it.

haha! Yeah It will be nice to DRIVE a loaner TSX and see what the car can really do, since mine is still in the process of breaking in, only 11.5 miles old. I bought the car without test driving. I just decided this is the closest thing to what Im looking for, I know wierd.
