Sorta OT: Should I have my plates by now?

Picked up my car on August 8. Dealership said they'd do the paperwork and the CA DMV would send me my plates. Should I have them by now? How long does it usually take?

Picked up mine July 28th and received the registration paperwork and sticker yesterday. I'm in PA if that matters at all.

Naptown reporting....

Picked up my car from Chicago and live in Indy.

I received the registration paperwork two or three days after driving the car home. Then again, Chicago's pretty close, so I don't know how CA BMV system works.

Naptown out.

DMV takes about a month to send you your plates and sticker. I think piece of paper the dealer sticks in the lower corner of the windshield is your temporary registration.

1.5 months for me in NJ, and they sent them to the wrong address, with the wrong registration and title address - my old address from 2 years ago when I used to live in NJ (just moved back). Yesterday when I went to fix it, they made me pay $5 to alter my registration.

I know nobody cares, but I can't help but :pee: on the NJ DMV

All right, then, I guess I'm probably still within normal range. I'll give it a couple more weeks. Thanks.

On another note, I'm planning to get custom plates. Apparently, I have to wait to get my sequential first, then send off for custom. Anyone have any experience with custom plates? If I don't get "DNL2BA," it'll probably be something like "PRCIOUS" or "PRESHUS." Mmmm... my precious... we wants it!

edit:
1. I can't find anything that says I need my sequentials first. I guess you need them before picking up your customs, but not before ordering.
2. All variants of "precious" seem to be taken, understandably. The best thing about "dnl2ba" is that it's never taken until I take it.

Purchased Car: 07/15
Plates Arrived: 09/04

I also applied for my personalized tags before waiting for the sequentials. So far I have the sequentials here and I am waiting for that damned post card to tell me to go get the personalized ones.

Since I applied for the personailzed ones on 7/21 I'm hopiing that post card comes this week. We'll see how fast the "personalization" dept works.

Per the DMV dude I asked you don't have to wait for the sequentials to arrive before getting personals. We'll see.

Also, per the CA Temporary Tag they put on the front window, DMV is allowed up to 90 days to provide tags.

Patience my son, patience. :

They have 90 days from the sell date of the vehicle.

Some dealers bundle registrations until they get a big batch and then send them into the DMV all at once for processing.

Mine took 50 days.

Car purchased 07/14. My registration said it was issued (from the DMV computer) on 8/30. The tags (plates) arrived 09/04.

They have up to 90 days huh? My rebate check for my new computer that i mailed off 3 weeks ago came in already. And i thought rebates were slow...

NJ DMV SUX!!!
like i said in another post my Temp tags expired the same day my plates were ready. Talk about cutting it close.
And right now im driving with an expired license cause they just recently implement a 6 point system for renewals. Where they award points to different identifications to renew ure license.
So a birth certificate, school id and credit card bill would total 6 points.
I cant find my birth certificate so now i gotta freaking do a process just to get a replacement!!!
My school id is expired i been outta school for 3 years!
once again FUCK NJ DMV!!

Ah, yes my friend but California DMV is not like most states. It is an experience all its own.

Friend from St. Louis has bitched about everything from CA highways to CA DMV. It's apparently much more lax in the midwest: nicer drivers, people driving the limit, DMV lines that don't go around the block...

I was actually under the impression (maybe because I'd lived here all my life) that my area was as lax as it gets, and it only gets worse when you get into the cities. I think SF is hairy enough-- I'd probably die of anxiety trying to get my new TSX through LA or NY without getting it scratched.

I don't know about that...

Trying to get your license renewed in Chicago (things may have changed since the mid 90s) was about the same ordeal. Lines out the door, endless waiting, but at least you walked out with license in hand at the end instead of having to wait for it to come in the mail like CA does.

Illinois Secretary of State had NO APPOINTMENT SYSTEM - you just went and waited in line. At least here they TRY to give us an appointment and stick pretty well to it.

But yes, CA can be a state all of its own.

I was driving with expired temp tags for 3 weeks before my plates finally arrived.

Are you sure that you need all that stuff to renew your license?? I only had my birth certificate - which I realize is exactly the credential you need (sorry) - and that was enough to renew my license that was cancelled two years ago when I moved away.
