Should I get first oil change?

I got the car in August and only have 1800 miles on it...yeah yeah...I don't really use the car cus I live in NYC. I know about the special factory oil but as I'm approaching the spring I would think I should change it soon.

What are the pros & cons in my case? Should I wait until 3700 as the dealer recommended? Michael Wan...I need your advice buddy!

Do a search. Follow the manual's guidelines.

10,000 mi/16,000 km Scheduled Maintenance
Replace engine oil.
Rotate tires (follow pattern on page 276 of your owner's manual).
Check engine oil and coolant at each fuel stop.
Check and adjust valve clearance, cold engine, only if noisy.

I've read the manual but my question is really only about the first oil change. Since its that "special" oil and its recommended that I let it do its magic, when should I change it out? At my current pace I won't reach 3700 until the end of the year.

1. Leave factory oil in until 3700 but the oil will be 1 year old.
2. Change the oil now and lose any factory oil conditioning/sealing benefits.

Which of the 2 should I pick?

Make a determination whether you fall under the "severe" or "normal" useage category. If you fall under "severe" then change it after 6 months, if under "normal" then change it after 1 year. And, BTW, not sure why your dealer picked 3700 for recommending the change. It should be either 5000 or 10000 miles, depending on type of useage.

Or, to say it a different way, If you drive under normal conditions the first oil change, per Honda's recommendation, is at 1 year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. For severe driving, 6 months or 5,000 miles, again whichever comes first.

I'm sure you'll get a variety of answers to your question. Anywhere from "Do it at 500mi to get the metal particles out" to "wait until 10K miles like the manual says". You'll have to decide who to listen to, and what to do.

I waited until 5000 miles, which for me took about 8 months, before I did the first oil change. I didn't switch to Mobil1 synthetic until my second oil change at 10,000 mi. I don't plan to do my third change until either 20K miles or 1 year after the 10K change. Please don't take what I did as the "correct" way. Is simply the intervals that I chose.

I'm gonna do what the car says. I've currently got about 60% oil life left after 1 month and just over 2500kms. Definitely can't wait for the first oil change but I'm not gonna rush it either.

Too early IMO but I have a feeling you won't listen anyway so do whatever you feel like. Won't really do any harm at all.
Pretty sure this particular topic has been discussed to absolute death on this busy forum.

Thanks J...the dealer's recommendation of 3700 threw me off as it did not take into account Normal or Severe driving. So I guess as a Normal driver I'll ignore his recommendation and do my change in August (1 year). I'll probably just make 3600 miles by then...perfect!

Huck...I'm listening I am!

It's a Honda engine. You won't live long enough for it to matter -- specially at the mileage you drive.

In your case twice a year sounds good.

Shit I just saw this thread.

You can change it out earlier...but really don't need to....Just wait 3000-5000 miles. If you're going to do it early, just run Havoline 5w30 conventional oil, which will have lots of Moly in it. Or use whatever oil the dealer used and add a bottle of Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment to it, which is really just Moly and AW additives.
