Should I do the Non-Navi to Navi conversion?

I've been pondering this question since flopez82 did his conversion but am just wondering in the end will it be worth the time & money or would I be better trading in my car for a Navi equipped TSX?

Hell no. It would be entirely too complicated and expensive. The whole climate control would have to be replaced, the dash, the audio system, etc. It would've been cheaper to buy one with navi.

Do it. Some guy did it. You just need the NAV unit and all the other things.

He wouldnt need to replace anything, just the stock unit with a NAV one and wire it together.

I would see how much those parts costs. You might also want to consider aftermarket navigation. If you do end up buying the parts, then try to look for used ones.

I'm guessing if you were to buy all of those parts directly from Acura, it would be very expensive. I remember Flopez82, saying that the harnesses alone where very expensive, so he had to make his own.

i've been wanting to do the navi conversion myself
the navi's go on ebay all day for like 400 with the DVD
if u buy from dealer it will cost u around 3 thousand just for the unit
try to get ahold of flopez about a wiring harness, if he will return ur messages. he ignores mine.
i wanna do this as soon as i can find an 05 navi on ebay.
you could buy 5 navi's on ebay, for one new one from teh dealer, it's worth the risk of ebay, in my opinion

The Navi conversion make as much sense as someone doing the auto to manual tranny conversion -- better off trading for a car with that feature already.

I'd like to do the navi conversion sometime down the line. I'm interested in the total cost and detailed instructions on what needs to be done. Kali: about how much do those parts add up to?

Just get a decent PDA with bluetooth... (Axim x50v was on sale for about $300-check slickdeals.net). And then get a bluetooth GPS receiver.

This is much, much better than wasting time & money into a retrofit.

OH HELL NO. aftering looking at the other thread with picture, i might as wellj ust spend 350 or 400 buy a portable one and save the trouble. wont look as OEM of course, but look clean as well and less tearing apart my car....

my main concern would not be for money or the work ( i would pay to get it done) the main concern is all the tearing , taking apart of things.. i dont want my car to come back with squeaking or rattling. then have to find some loose screw and parts...

I can't see the upside being worth the risk. I saw that other post, it was far too much work and not enough back for it. The portable idea sounds good. I personally have been thinking of getting an after-market one from Alpine. It's a DVD player, Ipod compatible, Mp3 Compatible, touch-screen, costs about the same, much less work, and probably has more features. The only downside is I am not crazy about the "deck" look in my tray. But I would say its a much lower price to pay than risking screwing anything up back there, or even if that isnt the case, getting a 2nd-hand system and the time spent ripping everything out to install it.

Yeah, especially that little blue light that gives it a "look". I mean, who at Acura thought of that? BRILLIANT! I am really hesitant to mess around with the interior. It looks nice. So a portable Nav like that is very cool, and probably a whole lot more useful since it is so portable.

Why not go for the Tom Tom 300 or the Tom Tom 700. The 700 has bluetooth to integrate your cellphone. It also can donwload real time traffic data to your GPS. The unit is very compact yet has a very good speaker at the back and a large LCD screen. If you are looking for a GPS for your car. This is a very good one.

There's no option for going with an after-market Nav unit. That would be what my vote goes to. Reason: if you are going to spend the $$$ to add Nav to your non-Nav TSX, might just as well do it with more personal/customized touch and go after-market.

I went aftermarket and am very happy with how nicely intergrated everything is for me. I got a Pioneer N1/N2 and have added Sirius, TV, Ipod, cell phone mute, and backup camera. I have voice control over all of the components and can also control everything using my Pioneer steering wheel remote. It doesn't look as elegant as the factory screen, but I like the fact that I can put the bright screen away when I don't wanna use it, and also take the whole setup with me when I change cars.

There is still no comparison to the Honda navigation system IMO! There is just something about being able to tell your car what to do and it does it.

When I bought mine it was about $1250 including shipping and the voice command/steering wheel remote. I bought it from a power seller on Ebay. If you buy from Ebay, make sure it is not a refurb. Or if you do get a refurb, make sure it is priced accordingly. You can probably get brand new units for between $1150-$1350 right now.

Here's a decent looking auction. I haven't bought from this seller, but he looks pretty good. I would still look around on Ebay though before buying. Try to find a seller who offers a 1 year warranty.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Pioneer-AVIC-N2-...QQcmdZViewItem

You'll also need a Acura mp3 attachment kit, and install. You can save some money if you can do the install yourself. It's not a extremely difficult install, but I wouldn't call it easy either. I can help you out with install details if you need them.

They just released the XM Navi traffic module too. The NavTraffic is only effective in big cities though. Since you live in LA, it would probably work well there. You should also look for a thread about the Pioneer N2 by Rmpage. He has a good thread with full pics.

The Pioneer N2 has voice commands too. I can control all of my extra components like TV, Ipod, Sirius with voice commands. You can also assign voice labels to destinations. One of the other cool things is that when I'm watching TV and using the Navi, little arrows will show up telling me I need to turn soon. And when the turn is about to come up, it moves away from the tv screen to show my the intersection, and then restores itself after I turn. The integration is pretty cool. Also, with Pioneer you have the flexibilty to get the XM traffic. I think the only car that has that right now is the RL.

Don't get me wrong, the factory navigation looks awesome, but if Navi isn't a main priority to you, then I think aftermarket is a good solution. For me, I'm all about my beats and entertainment, the navi is just a nice bonus.

I guess CJams is also referring to the climate control by voice command as well? The aftermarket system doesn't interface with that, does it?

Anyway, sounds like the N2 is pretty much a top-tier aftermarket system. Any other model higher than it that's worth considering?

That is a good point. No it will not control that. It's not important to me, but it might be to others. Everyone should take that into consideration before deciding. I hope people don't think I'm trying to knock the factory navi. I think it's a very sweet OEM system.

The N2 is the highest single DIN model with Navigation that Pioneer has. There is also the D1, but that is the double DIN unit. You can also buy any Pioneer deck with a screen, and buy the navi module seperately if want.

Alpine (who made OEM Navi), Kenwood, or Eclipse all have very good high end navigation models. Their navi systems are more expensive though, and might put you in the price range of getting OEM navigation.

If you opted not to get navi then yes, that aftermarket nav sound great. But if you have the choice before hand I say go navi baby!
Sounds like kenny's system is pretty sweet for aftermkt. It looks pimp as well with that digital gauge cluster.

I think its a good idea...for the money you spend you end up with the same cost as if you bought the car with it ($3000) and you can resell it as a navi equipped TSX not to mention the bragging rights of saying you had one put in...and you can always do a navi->dvd conversion all with the oem look...I would personnally look into doing it (read: having it done for me as I'm not electronically inclined enough to install this myself like flopez) all I would need is the extra $3000...so i say if you have it laying around and can get the parts go for it.
