Shifting into Reverse (MT)

How do you guys feel about the position of Reverse ... I prefer it next to 1st gear BUT requiring that you press in the gear-shift when you shift. Here's why ... When going from 5-6 the stick is going to move a little to the left ... so you have to move it a little bit more to the right to compensate. However it you move it to much and go down .... you're going 60 MPH and end up in reverse. Does the TSX MT have any sort of protection to prevent you from doing that?

There is a mechanical lockout that prevents shifting into reverse when moving forward (you'll just get a lot of grinding until you come to your senses and stop trying to shift into reverse). This is standard in all manual transmissions that I know of.

I think all cars would that have the reverse next to the 5-6 gear, I know the TSX does because I tried it out once. Just like how you can't shift into R in any 5spd. I too personally like the reverse gear next to second gear, but oh well... we can't have everything we want.

Well, I've had both (next to 5-6 in the TSX and next to 1-2 in a VW Jetta Turbo). I do like it next to 1-2 just because it seems like anytime you need reverse, you'll need 1st right away and having it right there makes it easier and a little quicker. I dont mind the TSX, but with 6 gears, it seems like reverse is a long way over there.

Having R to the right of 5-6 is fine for me.. Technically you're going straight down when shifting from 5-6 if you're shifting properly (just that your shift knob is bent to the right). Also, R not only has lockout, but it's spaced further out than 5 and 6 are. It's impossible to shift to R in normal circumstances..unless you have no idea what you're doing

Ugh. That drives me nuts. It's the only thing I don't like about German cars.

it did take a little while to get used to pushing down then right for R in the VW.

The funniest was my wife's first drive in the car. She wanted to take it to work so I left before her. She couldn't figure out how to back out of the garage so she had to leave it in neutral and push back with her foot hanging out the door. It took her about another month before she asked to drive it again. it was great!

Same here, but my experiences with BMW's are all in auto-x. In some courses, I had to shift to 3rd, then downshift to 2nd (some even required to downshift to 1st). Most of the time, I ended up putting the damn shift level in the reverse slot (not into reverse though). I don't know if the newer BMW's have any improvement on this, but the ones I drove (E30 M3, E36 325, and E36 M3) were all like that. I guess it would take me some more time to get used to. I still prefer the pattern in the TSX. Works great.
