Rust spots on top of paint

After handwashing my car, I noticed many rust spots all along the side. Since it's PWP, it's easily seen. Does anyone know what I should use to get them off? I can scratch them off with my fingernail but there's just too many. Any products out there that I can use to quickly get rid of these?

Thanks

I had rust on my roof, and the dealer repainted it under warranty

Actually - it's not rust, but rather environmental deposits (most likely).

I had these on my TSX and here's what you need:

Also check out the Acurazine Wash&Wax forum:

Thanks for the replies. I thought about using clay but never used it before so wasn't sure if it'll work in my case. I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Thanks again

These are known as rust blooms. It is probably due to rail dust during the initial transport of the car to the dealership. If not removed early on and left there for a long time, they will "bloom" (get larger). Try the clay bar.

Take a deep breath and settle down chief ... I was replying to the original poster. If you note he said he was able to remove then with a scratch of the fingernail.

Sorry you have a rust issue with your car glad Acura stepped up to the plate for you -- warranties are goooood.

I have similar spots on my PWP but they are really small right now. I posted a pic here:http://www.acura-tsx.com/forums/show...280#post392280

The pic doesn't work but I think we're talking about the same thing. Does clay put swirl marks in the clear coat?

not if you're doing it right. just make sure the crap you pick up into the clay doesn't scratch the surface as you go along. read up about proper claying technique and you'll have no problems.

and PWP definately needs to be claybarred often

I had those all over the lower body of my White Diamond Pearl TL - came right out with a clay bar. If they don't come out, then you have bigger issues and I'd take the car back to Acura.

Embedded rail dust or embedded brake dust. As everyone said, clay bar it. When in a parking lot, check out some of the other cars....they all get it, especially if they use semi/metallic brake pads. I spent 3 hours claying a white Jeep Grand Cherokee, had it all over the sides and back.

As a pro detailer I have to chime in here.....clay bar is indeed the way to go. Clay the crap out of it (use plenty of lube, not water) and follow that with a quality wax and you should be good to go.

I was very surprised to find rust blooms on my '08. I first found them along the floor boards, but have since found them all around the car. I removed the ones I saw with some wax and a little scratch with my nail. Can these blooms eventually lead to actual rust on the body of the car itself or are they just a comestic nusance?

I just spent 2 hours today removing Tons and TONS of these on my mom's 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited AWD (bright metallic silver). In fact, I really had to keep lubing some of them and almost scrub with the clay bar to remove them. It wasn't fun, but I did eventually remove all of them. Some are more stubborn than others. Just stay with it, and eventually they will all be gone!

Good luck!

Those rust spots are actually pieces of metal stuck in the paint. If you dont clay bar at least once a year, they will begin to rust.

There is a chemical I use from Valugard, called a dcon system (or ABC system) that can loosen the rust up for clay barring. The "B" part of the system is a concentrated acid that takes care of the rust, but doesnt harm the paint.
