remote starter

i live in chicago, and like all northerners know, its freezing here. we could handle it this winter, but by summer my dad wants to give the car a remote starter (from abt for all locals). we have a remote starter on the grand caravan, and had one on the 93 camry. am i going to lose the remote trunk operations with a new starter? also, i was thinking viper, is that a good company? btw i have had astro starts on both of the other cars. thanks for the feedback.

You won't lose the trunk operation. You can connect the trunk operation to ya new remote. I upgrade my alarm to Clifford Matrix RSX 3.5. It's exactly the same as Viper alarm, just different name. It works very well! I am enjoying it now.

I think you can only do it if you have an automatic tranny.

That's what I always thought too. But I found some that are designed for MT...here's a link to one...

http://www.a1electric.com/alarm2.htm

It's the 4th one down on the list.

Yes, but our MT doesn't allow ignition unless the clutch pedal is pressed. Now, I'm sure there's a way to bypass that, it's just a question of how hard it is to do so. And I'm not sure this company has addressed this (I don't think this kind of lockout is a common thing).

And even if you did get this to work, you'd have to remember to leave your car in neutral every time you park it (which I don't like to do).

Good point. I'm gonna do some research.

I'd only use it on cold winter days so that wouldn't be a problem.

I don't have my service manual with me now, but I think when you depress the clutch pedal during start, it just activates a switch to allow you to start the car. For sure, there is a way to bypass this because a friend of mine had this feature with his alarm system in his 90 Integra back in 1991. However, just one suggestion for all your MT'ers who are thinking about this, if it is your habbit of putting in 1st gear when parked, DO NOT get this. If it is your habbit to just leave in neutral when parked, go for it. My friend once forgot that he put in 1st gear, and he remote started the car. The car jumped forward and hit the car in front of him. Anyway, just a pre-caution for the MT'ers.

Sorry for getting off topic gocubs. In reply to your original message...yeah, you can hook up your trunk release to the new system...as for Viper being a good system, I can't give an opinion cause I never had one of theirs.
