Rant - TSX is Noisy !?

Had TSX for a month now....
one thing I wish is for the car to be a bit quieter....
I realized this when idling the car in the dead of night....everything turned off....
I was looking for a barely-noticeable, silky purr....but was rather disappointed

Do you think TSX is "comparatively noisy" for a JDM car ?
Is it because it only has 4-cylinder ? engine position ?
lack of insulation/soundproofing ?

I was told that "...that's the way....Hondas are always noisy...you want quiet, get Toyota..."
Yep....one can barely hear the low humm in a Camry.

I don't know if you've ever driven a Honda before, but the TSX is the quietest Honda in it's size. I know Camries are quiet cars, but the TSX is definitely quiet compared to the Accords I've had before.

As for idle, I can barely hear mine idle, even with everything shut off, so unless you have a particular problem specific to your car, I don't know what it is you're talking about... Or maybe you're really into looking for little bugs.

You are so picky! go seat in a VW then you will enjoy how quite is your tsx! And yes, Toyota is more quite than a Honda but I dun thing Honda is neway close to call noisy! Is it because of the ac fan?

just one of those ranting days huh? I think the TSX is perfectly quiet for my tastes, my friends think the stock tires have too much road noise though.

I can barely hear the engine at idle. I've been in a camry (4 banger) before and TSX is just as quiet. Maybe there's something wrong with your TSX.

Ok....points taken...I was actually thinking of going down to a Honda dealer &
test-drive an LX to see how that sounds....But I trust your judgement.

Now...answer me this please: but why is it a few automotive writings calls TSX noisy or something like that ?

That is because there are too many blazé journalists who absolutely have to find something negative about the car to write down articles that will sell paper.

I have never seen an article that called the TSX noisy. Could you reference one for us?

Have a ride in my family's Toyota RAV4...you will feel every bump on the road. For the most part, Toyota's are quiet though. Too quiet for my tastes.

My TSX is very quiet compared with the Civic and Corolla I'm used to driving. Especially on the highway, it's no comparison.

TSX noisy? Not mine. Its so quiet that sometimes, when idling, you can't tell that the engine is running when you stand a few feet away.

One reviewer noted that the TSX sustained "too much" ambient noise at cruising speeds on freeways. Don't remember which one, but of the available reviews accessed from Google before I bought, there was only one that noted it. I find the car very quiet at idle, and am only pleasantly aware of the engine sound while driving. In comparison to my old Jetta GLX V6? A tomb.

I find that the TSX is very quiet for the most part. The tires are very loud however, esp on rough pavement. In hwy driving, there is more road noise than I'd like. Perhaps Acura could have done a better job of insulating against sound coming from the wheel wells, but part of the reason the tires seem so loud on the hwy is that there is very little wind noise. In other cars, the wind-rushing noise would mask the tire-humming noise to some extent. But there is very little wind noise in the TSX, so the tires seem louder by comparison.

depends on how high you rev. you need to rev it to 4000+ rpm to achieve the acceration like a V6 with 2500rpm. But that sound are sweet.

Considering the entire "point" of this car, its very quiet. This is not a Lexus ES nor a Camry. It is intended to be FUN and NOT isolate the driver.

You get a decently smooth ride, razor sharp handling and enough feedback of the road to know whats going on beneath you.

This includes a non-overboosted steering wheel, good brakes, enough road/engine noise to let you know its actually running etc etc.

IF you want a quiet Acura, get an RL but be prepared to sacrifice some "fun to drive" factor in exchange for the serene ride.

Take crack pipe.. place it down..

Listen to your car again without being high..

At idle i sometimes forget my car is on its so smooth.. Did you put rocks in your oil or something?

The TSX is plenty quiet for me! Then tiniest bit of road noise from the tires as everyone else said, but that's about it.

But if you want noise: You should've heard my old Jeep. It was on Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tires that made noise like you wouldn't believe. Man I miss my Jeep sometimes! :'( Still, I love my new TSX, though.

Quiet engine (at 3500 RPM and below), but there's a good deal of road noise at 60 MPH+.

I would agree. My Jeep is quieter at speed than the TSX, but the engine is much noiser.

I hadn't driven my TSX for just over 2 weeks and tried TWICE to start the engine while it was already running.

My TSX 6MT, which I picked up yesterday, is the first MT that I've ever driven. It's so quiet and smooth that I have to look at the Tach to see when to shift.

The only complaint from the reviews on the car (and I read every one of them) that I think is valid is the complaint about the door lock being right where you want to put your arm with the window down. I mean, on such a perfect car I can't believe that didn't get noticed.

I would have to agree with the original post.

There is no doubt that the engine is refined and quiet from the inside of the vehicle.

However, i think that they sound a bit rattley when idling and the bonnet is up (BTW this is now big deal anyway) The fact that the engine is mounted with inlet facing forwards, means it should be quieter inside, from behind the engine, than front on looking at it.

Oh so happy with my accord

Hmmmm. One of the things I noticed about the TSX during test-drives was that valve-train noise was constantly audible when cruising. It wasn't especially loud, but it was there. It was easier to hear at 40-50 mph than on the interstate (where other noises are comparitively louder). Overall, I did find the car to be quiet (and maybe this is why you can hear the engine).

Couldn't agree more. Since my first post on this topic, I've logged about 1,000 miles on varied road conditions and at varied speeds. I think the engine and cabin are uncannily quiet at idle and low speeds. I become aware of road/tire sounds at high speeds, and it does become more pronounced at 80 to 90 mph, especisally with an abrasive road surface. Still wouldn't call this car "noisy".

I have no problem with the TSX, I actually think its rather quiet. With the car idling and everything off.....i bearely notice any noise. And as far as acceleration from a stop, that sound is sweet!

The TSX is alot noiser then a 4-cyl 5-speed accord. Specially at WOT!

My first ever post on these boards was a Decibel comparison that Edmunds had between the 2003 Accord V6 and the 2004 TSX:

From Edmunds:

http://www.edmunds.com/new/2003/hon...ialpage=page001
2003 Accord V6:

Db @ Idle 66
Db @ Full Throttle: 88
Db @ 70 mph Cruise: 92

http://www.edmunds.com/new/2004/acu...ialpage=page001
2004 Acura TSX (2.4L 4cyl)

Db @ Idle: Lo
Db @ Full Throttle: 77
Db @ 70 mph Cruise: 75

I don't think the first link works anymore, but the second still does.
