radar detectors
Hey any of you guys here use radar detectors?
Trust me...the TSX is going much faster than what it feels like....
with today's ticket prices...guess its time for a detector?
any good models or recommendations would be appeciate...
by the way...where is a good place to hide the detector....
im thinking in the center, since theres a 12v output right under it, but would it affect the radar's rays that much and make the detector not do its job?

I dont believe radar detectors are illegal, well here in california they aren't atleast. I do know radar jammers are illegal. I also do know that the most effective place to put a radar detector it near the rear view mirror.

Illegal in VA and DC, also part/all of Canada
I'm not sure if its all of Canada or not, as well as many placees outside of the US. The passport 8500, the most expensive BEL (about $330) and the Valentine (about $400)(but has the patent for rear detection as well as front).
Its fresh in my mind because an employee of mine who travels the hwys of Mexico needed advice as radar has arrived on the west coast of Mexico, a la 1980 US. There was good quantified info at radartest.com or something like that, i found it on Google. Good luck, drive carefully, knowing there's no substitute for following a fast car at some distance with a good detector nearby. BTW, if your a hardcore TSXer, consider getting one of the hidden installed units, set you back about a grand.

Radar Detectors and scramblers are LEGAL
I suggest you get the Rocky Mountain Radar RMR-C450 Combo unit, both detector and scrambler. You will come to find that radar detectors are also alert you to the Safety Warning Signals regulated and put out by the US government.
You will also find if you do your research that Rocky Mountain is by far the best radar company a bit pricey but worth it in the long run.
I am not advocating Speeding but sometimes we make mistakes why not have something to remind us.

I have an Escort Passport SR7 with laser shifters. It's a remote mount detector with a hidden antenna and diodes, and laser diodes to scramble the laser speed traps when they try to get a fix on the vehicle. Since it is concealed, I can use it in states where they are illegal to own without worry.

my roommate has a passport one, and it was supposed to be the top of the time. but the notice is a little late. my other friend has a valentine v1 or something like that, and that thing was amazing. it was going crazy and we were all like there's no cop. it also has an arrow pointing to the direction the cop is supposed to be at. and then we passed an area and the arrow moved from forward to sideways, and pretty much pointed right at the cop hiding around a bush. we were all amazed because it was on point. so i personally would say the valentine, only because i've experienced both of them while being speed gunned. hope that helps.

i say get either the bel rx65 or passport 8500 x50. radartest.com did a review of the bel rx65 vs passport 8500 x50 vs the Valentine 1, and the bel came out on top. http://radartest.com/article.asp?articleid=9090

I've read somewhere here that if you install the detector in the sunglass holder area you can easily tap into the maplights for power. A search will lead you to the threads.

I was at Sound Design a couple of weeks ago looking at radar detectors and they had a cordless one that used AA batteries. I can't remember the brand and I'm not sure how good it is, but you don't have to worry about cords.

The SR7 is a pretty cool device.

I did some research and ended up going with the Escort Solo S2 (Cordless). Running cords for standard radar detectors can be a little difficult to do given the TSX interior trim (headliner and A-pillar), which you would have to do to mount a detector high to give it the best range.
The so-called "remote" detectors, such as the one indicated by rmpage above, are pretty nice units, but they are pretty expensive and may require more wiring than you want to do (i.e. go through the firewall, mount and wire rear sensor(s), etc.) I'm also not sure that the remote detectors can be sent in to the manufacturer for flash upgrades...
Anyway, sorry for running on, but I chose the Escort Solo S2. I rarely get falsing, and when it does pick something up, the display matches the TSX cluster perfectly. Also, Escort (i) sells a "smart cord" that allows you to get visual alerts remotely and hardwire it if you want to and (ii) allows for integration with the Escort laser jammer system. I have been very pleased. You can check out one article on it by following this link, and reading near the bottom of the page.
