Pulled over (do HIDs attract cops?)

It's been awhile since I've posted here, maybe 2 years since acura-tsx.com was merged. Been lovin the ride.

So on to the story ...

I was out to grab a bite to eat around 1:00 am. I'm making a left on a fresh green light and pass a cop just before I turn. Let the clutch out too fast and chirp the tires. Cop makes an abrupt u-iee and turns on the rollers. He pulls me over ... yadda, yadda, yadda ... $110 fine for disturbing the peace...blah, blah, blah. I tell him I'm still getting used to the sensitive clutch. After a stern talking to, he lets me go and shakes my hand (??) once I tell him my age.

It is me or do cops see the HIDs and think 'TFTF road racer type' behind the wheel everytime they pass me? They're always giving the TSX a close look whenever passing the opposite way.

"Disturbing the peace" for chirping the tires? Could that really hold up in court?

Weck, your HIDs had nothing to do with attracting the cop. The tire chirp did.

... that and a bored old cop looking for some punk ass kid to rile.

It didn't help that I looked the part of some kid taking his parent's car out for a spin - ball cap, grubby clothes, radio blasting loud rock and roll music. Hmm, maybe that's it - maybe he doesn't appreciate Foo Fighters?

i do wonder sometimes if they sorta look for the lights. out here tho ive been lucky since the HIDs are not commong with teenagers unles theyre out for a spin in thier parents cars. thus another reason why i had my windows tinted, i hated being checked as i drove by someone. or when the cop drives past hangs by for a bit to see if im doing something stupid.
thats why at night, on the back roads here that are known to be infested with them the cruise control becomes my best freind. rest of the time, during the daylight atleast i try to blend in, no need to be sticking out of the crowd unless necissary.

I think cops just get bored sometimes.

I was driving home with my brother from Denver International Airport on highway 85 one night after dropping a friend off for a flight. Although it's a highway, after 11 pm or so it is pretty open, so I was the only car in the northbound lanes for a few miles. I drove through an intersection and noticed a cop waiting at the light, so immediately turned on the cruise control so that I wouldn't have to worry about my speed (even though I wasn't speeding at the time).

A minute or so later, the cop catches up to me and begins to trail pretty close. I was a little weary, but knew I hadn't been speeding and didn't have anything to worry about. About 5 minutes passed and my exit approached, so I got into the turn lane. As soon as I made my turn, the cop flipped on his lights and pulled me over. I couldn't believe it.

As he approached the car, he had his flashlight out and was pointing it right at me. I caught sight of his uniform and noticed he was a trooper (highway patrol). Anyway, as soon as he got to my window he said something to the effect of "I've been following you for a good 10 miles, and you were doing an aweful lot of swerving. Are you intoxicated."

I looked at my brother, who couldn't keep a straight face, since I had never (and have yet) consumed any alcoholic beverages in my entire life. I chatted with the guy for a while, as he proceeded to lecture me and eventually let me off with a warning.

It was the most awkward situation, since there was no way I was swerving (I knew the cop was behind me and was driving as such) and yet I couldn't really argue with the guy. Oh well, what can you do?

see that bothers me, his word against yours. of course you guys are a little bit older than i but even still, i think cops need to start having stricter regulations, and penalties when they screw up. like the situation above, if you wanted to persue the situation, he should have to face the same simliar problems you would but for himself (kinda like have it affect him the same way)

Spinning the tires is a moving violation in the U.S. If you drive a clutch you are supposed to know how to operate it properly or you can get ticketed.

The problem is that cops don't make that much money, so the really good people don't want to become cops because you can't make much money. That leaves the less qualified individuals to be cops. These individuals are more likely to let the power get to their heads and power trip with the new authority.

Wow- I've actually chirped the tires in my 5AT, but that was on a wet road. Didn't know it was illegal. Although I could see it if you were burning tons of rubber.

Yeah, excessive acceleration is a moving violation... think twice before you peel out in front of a cop.

hm..as a memeber of PD. i make quite decent money. high 70s just after 5 years. and ill be 80K and above soon. money is never an issue, if any profession. police makes good money and steady income
by the way.. it is not your headlight that attract police, most of my co workers drive infiniti. mbz. bmw. jag. HID is nothing that would attract us. at least not in los angeles.. it is the tire chirping. "SOME", and i stress only "SOME" sensitive ones, might get offended by your tire chirping when u are beside them. that EGO kicks in.and yes the burning tire. disturbing the peace can hold up in court.......so..its just a shitty situation...for u i suppose...but dont worry about HID...just go light on the clutch next time

I think that he meant that the pay is not commensurate to the hazardousness of the job. The private sector offers much better compensation when compared to the risks a peace officer takes. Hence it is hard to find the consistant quality individual to fill the position and the need to offer high incomes is necessary. There is some truth to this, but there are bad apples everywhere.

On topic...don't worry about HIDs unless you adjusted them higher than the legal limit. As long as you are within the law, your word against his is always solved in court in a equitable way. If you don't want to be bothered by cops just don't spin your tires or speed or drive drunk or...well you get the picture.

My friend just filed for bankruptcy, works for department of justice. Does have a nice lightning though.

I will say this, and I know you're gonna bash me, but honestly I appreciate cops, and if it wasn't for a jerk that hit me just before I was to take my PAT test, I would probably be a correctional officer by now! The only law enforcement that I really hate is CHP, because to me, if you're going 70 in a 55 on a visible day, with no traffic in site,I mean literally no one out on the highway (this is near Clear Lake on Hwy 29)...how exactly am I posing a hazard to pull me over and give me a speeding ticket? And yet the jerkoff that rear-ended me, who fucked my back probably forever, and has no insurance, gets to go free with not even a ticket? And the dispatch didn't even wanna send a CHP out to file a report...sheesh (her answer was unless a car was immobilized and someone was seriously injured, they don't send out anyone). Oddly enough, CHP are the ones with the most benefits and better pay than any of the law enforcement agencies in the state!

traffic cops in my town are a-holes, the day i installed my SRI i took it up to 6K in first gear when i left my driveway. The turn I was taking was about 40 feet from my driveway so i didn't even shift to second. While I'm waiting for the light to turn I notice there was a cop behind me. He walked up to my car and told me he gunned me going 40. I tried to explain to him that there was no way I had gotten to that speed in that short of a distance in that little amount of time and that it was just a very loud car (intake/exhaust at 6K) and I did end up with just a warning. Even so, pretty ridiculous
