power

Currently own a '01 CL. Before that, a '98 CL. I am very nterested in the TSX but am afraid that its 4 cylinder is to weak.

BE HONEST: How is the TSX's acceleration and overall power?

Be specific re: from standstill; highway merging. How much does this change with a few passengers in the car?

My previous car was an '01 CL-S and I can tell you that you will notice a difference of course (260HP vs. 200HP 4 cyl), but for every day driving the TSX is fine. I've had no problems with merging on the highway or anything like that, and this has been with 3 people in my car as well. I haven't been in a situation so far where I was yearning for more power. This is the first 4 cylinder car I've had and I was pretty surprised how smooth the engine is.

Best thing to do is go and do a test drive. Only then will you know for yourself. I can tell you that the first time I test drove the TSX, I noticed a huge difference in speed compared to my CL-S and didn't think I could take that much of a step down, but afterwards I found it totally acceptable.

Take a test drive by all means!

I'm amazed at those who yearn for a 6 in a TSX. If it means that much, get a TL.

I love Honda's 4 cylinder engines! Whereas other manufacturers may have relatively noisy, crude, or rough 4's, Honda sets the standard for engine refinement of 4-bangers.

I agree. I have driven up the grape vine in Cali (a steep upgrade where semis can only go 25 mph). With four people (me 260lb, my brother 290lb, wife 130lb, sis-n-law 125lb, total 805lb) Luggage, Ice chest, a whole lot of wieght. I was able to pass cars (40-80mph) going uphill very easily. This is buy far the best 4 banger I have ever owned.

Your friends are lightweights.

The other night I had:

Me = 6'2" @ 220 lbs.
Rick = 5'9" @ 320 lbs.
Ken = 6'0" @ 240 lbs.
Don = 5' 10" @ 180 lbs (he's a lightweight).

No issues. Definitely slower (since I had en axtra 740 lbs. in the car, but still got up and went.

Er, I recall reading from a sticker in the driver's doorframe that the max load (passengers + cargo) is 850 lbs. That's probably a conservative number, but personally, I wouldn't want to do anything rough with the car too much past that...

you have to pay close attention to gear selection when you're merging on the highway because the acceleration isn't that great.

and, i've previously driven the 02 tl, and i definitely CAN feel a difference.

from a stand still it's not the eyes-in-the-back-of-their-sockets type acceleration but it's not a sleepy cat by any means either. I've taken co-workers out to lunch and back and all have commented on how punchy it feels for a 4-banger. They are especially impressed by the smoothness. I have no trouble merging onto the freeway.

On a daily basis you won't really notice a lack of power by any means unless you drag from light to light on your way home. If it really bugs you that much you should look towards the TL as mentioned above.

I only notice a lack of power from a standstill. Once it gets going, it feels plenty quick to me. I've been happy with it.

Overall, the engine is great. The only problem, which isnt that big a problem, is when you're cruising on the highway and you have to go up a slight incline and you try to keep speed...then it sounds kinda funny...like its kinda struggling...but i still love it.

My old 92 Civic had the same 850 lbs. rating, with a 102hp and 2300 lb curb weight. I think it's just Honda's standard figure.

I think the capacity weight is limited by the tires. Just take the max weight per tire X 4 and subtract the vehicle weight and you'll get the approximate capacity weight of the car.

the power is alright man with the Tsx, definately more powerful than my 99 Accord 4cyl was. if you think the Tsx is weak and want power, then go shopping for a G35 sedan or coupe, I've driven both and vroom it's really quick, faster than the new TL's because of the high torque output Nissan/Infiniti put in the G35's engine.
