Possible problems from Mis-Shift?
Possible problems from Mis-Shift?
Tonight I was close to redline (6800 - 7000) in 3rd and I accidently dropped it into 2nd, I was still letting the clutch out when I realized what I had done. My revs jumped to around 8000 for an instant before I got the clutch back in.
everything sounds fine and idle is still smooth, what should I watch for if there were to be any problems?
Thanks in advance.

Could be valve float, causing valves to hit pistons, or just the bottom end plain and simply breaking apart, which is a definite risk on the TSX because of the long stroke and the relatively bad R/S ratio.

redline is not a problem, but 8000 or 8500 is well past redline.

it'll be on the car's engine codes and when u take it in for service for any kinda warranty repair they will tell you to go fuck urself because you 'over-rev'ed the engine...
at least thats what they did to me before i went to another dealer who checked the car free of charge and said that everything was good to go
K24s rule, built like a rock... thats what Honda motors are made for; I'm sure yours is fine... just heads up for the bullshit u may have to deal with at the dealer.

How's that for an ending.
Really... 8500.. even 9000RPM for a very brief period of time won't hurt much. The 'classic' mis-shift at its worst hits about 11,000RPM (thats redline 3rd into 2nd). At about 9500RPM, even for a breif instant, the valve spring retainers shear and the valve drops into the combustion chamber.
If it goes... it goes big... there isn't really much in between.

Unofficially, a F20C is good for over 10,000 -11,000 RPM for a brief moment before really bad things happen. Having said that, I wouldn't go hunting for situations to exceed the redline by 1000 rpm. The K24 has a longer stroke and heavier flywheel (feels this way anyway) and I suspect that this helps in situations like yours. Frankly, it doesn't spin up as quickly as a K20A or F20C and this probably saved you from serious damage.

This is why there's a dwindling market for MTs. All those misshifting drivers end up in fireballs.
