Park with e-brake or in gear?

Not trying to flame but, the parking instruction is described in your DMV's driving manual. 1st gear and the e-break, always. The only situation I'd leave it in any other gear is probably because I was drunk

Okay, I'm going to throw in a twist. If you just finished high speed driving with heavy braking, don't use the e-brake. Just put in in gear. Because you can potentially warp the rear discs.

if the car is stable and not moving, what could cause it to reach that force to break the static friction of the ebrake?

E-brakes wear out over time or warp, so it is possible for it to slip.
What I usually do is once the car comes to a stop, I
1) Press the brakes
2) Pull the E-brake
3) Put it in 1st or reverse depending on situation
4) Let go of breaks.
This one time, I was on my driveway (slight decline), and I depressed the clutch to start my engine and the car started to slip backwards. Yes, the e-brake was up, but it was rolling regardless.

i do btoh gear and e brake. i got a funny story for you guys about doing this though.
this girl lives across from my backyard and i used to give her rides to school. one morning i was cookin breakfast and she showed up, so i told her to start my car and get it warmed up. i mentioned the gear and she said her old boyfriend had a manual, so dont worry. when she comes in she said it was makin a funny sound but wasnt scary sounding, so i didnt worry. after about 10 or 15 minutes i go out the front door with her to hear the engine workin real hard. i finally get around the corner to see the front tires spinning on my icey driveway. the car was parked faced our mustange, on the ice, with the ebrake still on and it in FIRST GEAR! it would spin and stop, (traction control) but it was a foot from another vehicle with the back tires holding it still. the 2 front tires basically melted a hole almost all the way into the driveway from the heat, im happy it didnt make it too far. i guess her boyfriend doesnt park in gear, so she slowly got off the clutch and heard it engage in gear, but wit hthe help of the icey driveway, it didnt stall.
no damage done in the end, aside from a little ebrake wearing and the girl felt pretty bad after i gave her shit.
anyways, i thought it was funny

Good story, CMan. That's the reason I recommend teaching noobs to drive stick in an icy parking lot. The slippery surface tends to smooth out their mistakes so the car doesn't jerk around so much. Don't recommend doing it with the parking brake on though.

For the 6MT owners...how many of you park in gear vs. neutral?
I was wondering how many TSX 6MT owners always park their car in gear.
As a newbie to manual, I prefer to just park it in neutral w/ the parking brake. I tried parking in gear a few times, and every time I did I forgot to either put it back into neutral or keep the clutch held down after I start it up. A few times, I would've smashed into a car in front of me had there been one...
I understand that the parking brake will wear down over time, but how long do you think that will take before the car just rolls off on its own???

C'mon, give the guy a break. He has a question and needs our help. He says he has already done a search and didnt find the answer he was looking for. So just because you may be satisfied with responses contained in an old thread, he obviously is not. What is with all these "do a search" comments? Its not like this site gets sooo many new threads that we cant have a repost here or there.
To try to answer your question, I usually just use the parking brake, unless I'm parked on a hill or incline, then I use both the brake and then put it into gear. I've never heard of the parking brake wearing down like you describe. But I have heard that simply putting the car in gear without the brake can put strain on the trans as basically your using tension of the gears to hold the car in place.

The standard way is to put the car in 1st gear, engage the parking brake and lift your foot off the brake pedal. The car should be held by the parking brake, the transmission is back up.

I wasn't hard on the guy, just telling him the rules. The rules of this forum are to do a search before posting a topic to avoid a topic being posted multiple times. This is how the forum works. I don't expect you to know that having only 2 posts. I can link you to the rules if you would like. If his question was not answered in the original post, he is more than welcome to ask another question in the related post. See my suggestion of him bumping the old thread for reference.
Forums run on bandwith, which means that they do not have an unlimited amount of space. This forum is particulary big, with many subsections and threads. So every little bit of space helps. I have been here a while and have developed a sense of respect for this place. I posted that original thread so I remembered the question, I gave him several answers to his question and hopefully taught him the rules of the forum.

I just leave it in neutral and use the hand brake. I think the owners manual recommends putting it in reverse if its going to be parked for an extended period of time other wise neutral is fine. I'm not at home so I can't check on that right now though.

I set the vehicles weight against the parking brake, then leave the car in gear. No weight on the tranny that way, except if it's needed in some sort of emergency. That's my story and I'm sticking by it.

To answer the question, I park in neutral most of the time for the same reasons. I always use the e-brake and if on a hill either 1st or Reverse. On hills it's also a good idea to put the e-brake on before shutting the car off and releasing the clutch -- that way no pressure is put on the tranny. Hope this helps.

Before you start your car, always jiggle the gearstick left and right. If it moves, then it is in neutral. If it doesn't, then it is in gear and you should put it in neutral. This jiggling is probably taken for granted by seasoned MT drivers that they forget to teach it to you.

I'm sure there are a lot of people who start their cars in 1st gear or 2nd gear, however they parked.
