"Formula 1 cars are normally meant to last for only a couple hundred or so miles over a race weekend, so a few essential tweaks are made to stretch out the servicing requirements of those sold to customers. "The cars of Schumacher and Barrichello will rev to 18,000 or more rpm, but for customers, we take them down to 15,000 or 16,000," says Claudio Berro, the man in charge of all Ferrari and Maserati racing activities outside the F1 team.

"That means the engines can do 1000km before a [complete engine] rebuild, and customers will probably get 100 laps out of a set of tires. We expect most customers to get one season out of the car before it needs to come back to us."



Sounds like a very smart business idea to me

 

I want a Ferrari F2002, the most dominant F1 car of all time, although not nessesaraly the fastest.

 

wow, a million dollar ride...wonder how much the insurance premium would be...but heck if you could afford an F-1, insurance would be pocket change...

 

You could never insure that thing for public roads anyways.

 

Not like you could even drive it on a public road. You wouldn't be able to get it out of the driveway!

 

If you can afford one of those toys, you could also have a 2 1/2 mile long driveway!

Or your own track.

 

If money were no object (is it ever?) I would definitely own my own track!

 

I don't think the f2002 was the most dominant ever... didn't mclaren win 15 out of 16 races one year (prost and senna)?

 

Ya good point, forgot about those cars. But we can't buy those, so I'll get the next best thing.

But I wonder if the car would have been as dominant without those 2 great drivers as opposed to the F2002 only having 1 great driver.

 

well that's not Ferrari style. notice how Ruben started to win, when the team got behind him 100%.

Also, MS can't handle the stress of having 2 #1 drivers on the same team. Look at his record and you will always see his teammate as somebody good but not great.

To me it's incredible that a team like McLaren could take the 2 best drivers and have them on the same team. Yes, Senna had at times more attention than Prost but still incredible to watch.

And yes i'm an MS fan but I just wish the team would get the 2 best drivers out there and treat them equally.

 

Who better to push Micheal than Jacques Villeneuve? And we know he's available.

In these big dollar days we'll never see a Senna/Prost combo. The salaries and more importantly ego's as too big for one garage.

 

Not true... we will see JPM and KR at McLaren which to me is a pretty impressive pairing. JV's mouth will never let a MS/JVi paring.

 

That was 1988 wasn't it? Senna and Prost sure didn't hurt, but I seem to recall reading a fair amount of press that chalked McLaren's dominance up to Honda.

From what I remember, a fair number of people thought the McLaren was a good chassis but nothing outstanding. It was just that the Honda engine had such a power advantage over everyone else that it allowed the McLarens to "drag aound" more wing while maintaining the same straight line speed as the rest of the field. Anyone else remember hearing this?

 

Devo, Juan Pablo has already signed on with Mclaren for the 04 season so there's no chnace of seeing JV and KR together at Mclaren unless it happens this year. As of right now JV has no ride, although I could see him at Willimas if Frank at some point decides its not benificial to have JB drive for him this year when he's already commited to leaving. I know I would'nt want a lame duck driver so to speak driving my car.

Billiam I bet those Honda engines were great, but I'm sure the drivers had alot to do with it as well. I still can't figure out why they have yet to dominate F1 like they use to. I refuse to belive that someone can out engine them, its just not possible.

 

I think you misread my post... i never mentioned JV at McLaren... I'm saying it will be a nice pair between JPM and Kimi (KR).

JV might have a chance at Williams (05) but JV strikes me as the hard headed type and will take the attitude that if F1 rejected me in 04... then the f*&k with F1.

The best thing that could happen to F1 is to have 2 teams with really nice pairings... JV and MS at Ferrari and JPM/KR at McLaren. That would be something but again... JV at Ferrari will never happen.

JV and Ron don't get along so I don't think JV ever had a chance at McLaren.

JV though is too talented a driver not to be racing. I'd love to see him at Ferrari to finish his father's unfinished business.

 

I'd take an F2002, if one were given to me, but I'd definately take the F2003-GA first. Even Michael and Rubens assured all that they were more satisfied with the 3-GA. Just because the margin of victory in the manufacturers' championship was small doesn't mean that the car was less dominant. The FIA finally worked over the rules to make the playing field more level. Bastards.

I would never want Jacques at any other house outside of Honda (BAR). I don't think that anyone would heavily consider signing him to anything over a 1-yr deal anyway. I'd be all over Fernando Alonso after his deal with Renault is up. Ferrari would be wise to grab him up.
