Outta control gas prices
Lowest price I've seen locally is $2.23/gal. for 91 octane at two local ARCO stations. The news reported that the wholesale price of gas dropped about 30 cents/gal. from a couple of weeks ago and that the price of gas would soon follow. Yeah Right.
It's dropped 3 cents from two weeks ago.

Last time I filled up it was 2.29 a gallon in San Jose, CA. Unfortunately us in the Bay Area are usually among the highest prices in the nation.
Here is a cool site showing different prices in our area. 2.49 a gallon looks the highest as of right now.

In europe we pay about 1.10 euro per litre. Must say that it's for 95 octane fuel (which is standard here). You can also go for 98 octane fuel, which is about 1.25 euro per litre. I think a gallon is about 4.5 liters. (your octane levels are pretty low though.... what is the octane level on your 'premium fuel' ?)
$2.07 for 93 octane in NYC
Side question though: Did Sunoco get rid of the Ultra 94? I have been using Amoco 93 for the last 3 years because it just hasn't been convenient to get Sunoco, but one finally opened up in my neighborhood and they only have 93 now???
Sorry to thread jack.

That's really expensive. I can see why small cars sell well over there. I live in Canada and we're paying about $0.85/L for 94 octane. I think they use a different formula for calculating octane in North America than they do elsewhere. Our 94 octane is roughly the same as your 98.

cheapest gas ...
You guys ever check out this site...it's basically the lowest gas prices recorded in your state.
Just try www.yourstategasprices.com/
ie www.newhampshiregasprices.com...
But then again, don't feel too bad. Gas in Europe is about $5 a gallon !
When i'm over in Germany It's costing me well over $100. to fill an Audi A8 over there. Fortunately Audi reimburses me... but driving high speeds in Europe, though fun will definately cost you.

But not even the highest in the country and yet our gas prices are the highest in the country by far. I remember someone put up a listing of all the states and their total gas taxes per gallon and I think there were 3 or so states with more taxes per gallon than California, yet they had gas prices substantially cheaper than Cali.

As this gas can only be sold in CA no one wants to make too much of it and so if there is a shortage or a problem or they feel like screwing us they usually do.
California also changes over to the special low-smog gas around the end of Feb and uses it through Oct so the prices shoot up. Add to that the upcoming driving season and it doesn't look good. $3 here we come. :'(
Blame California EPA *and* the refineries.
IIRC California has just 6 refineries to provide gasoline for the entire state. And because we have a special formula mandated by state law we can't import from other areas. During the changeover from winter to summer fomulas (or the reverse) the refineries are not at max production. If demand increases beyond the production limit, prices will spike up. This problem will only become worse as our gas consumption increases unless we can either produce more or standardize our gasoline formula to allow other state's products in when needed.
Now the question is, how much will prices decline here when production once again increases to meet demand?

$2.47 for 91 gas here in San Luis Obispo, CA
I laugh whenever people talk about how expensive gas is yet they buy bottled water for 3 times the price of gasoline. Gas should be $10/gal when you figure all of the processing and refining that goes into making it and delivering it to your tank. Just be thankful that its as cheap as it is.
Gas is pretty cheap here in Georgia. We transport gas through underground pipes, not by trucks, so the gas isn't taxed to death. It's about $1.52 average for regular, and it's just a bit more for the higher stuff.
