Oil Filter at Honda Dealership Instead of Acura

So i called my acura dealership and asked about picking up a fitler, for my DYI oil change this weekend. $8.25 for a filter. So i ask, is the same filter available at honda dealerships, and he said yes, as expected. since the honda dealership is closer to my parents house, i stopped by there this morning to get the filter. $6.

can you believe that just because it's acura, they charge more for the filter? i was talking to the gm of the honda dealership, who is a friend of my dad's, and he said that everything is less at honda, including the service. from now on, i go to honda dealerships for anything other than warranty issues!

Evidently the labels cost more to print on an Acura part.

Did you get the filter made by Honeywell or Filtech? I have 3 Hondas and they all use the same filter.

That's the Filtech filter p/n. However, just about all Acura and Honda dealers have replaced it with the Honeywell filter.

I think most if not all of those parts are interchangeable. I also think that the initial cost might be the same coming from the manufacturer and that it's the dealer marking hte prices up more. But i may be wrong on that though.

Filtech is 15400PLMA01
FRAM(Honey Well) is A02

Do not buy the Fram one! If your dealership do not have the Filtech ones, I recommend the purolator pureone oil filter for $6 at Pepboy, top notch stuff.

How do you guys determine what is a good filter and a bad one?
Flow, filtering capacity, etc.

If I change my oil often, I would be most interested in flow rather than filtering capacity since I wouldn't think it would get overly soiled. So which ones has the best flow?

Care to explain?

I use the Honda S2000 filter by Toyo Roki....larger size, very well put together, and not that much more expensive.

Filtering capability and capacity aside, does anyone know what the bypass valve specification is for all these non-oem and oem filters? What oil pressure would open up the bypass valve and allow oil to flow? I'm assuming these filters physically fit many makes/models of cars, but not all car manufactures use the same bypass valve spec.

Some info on bypass valve...

It's the same reason a bottled water costs $.79 at walmart, but $4 at an upscale bar. They know they can charge it and people will pay it, because the customers are different. They figure if they bought an Acura, they can afford it, so might as well get another dollar or two. Basic economics.

Isn't the the TSX's pollen filter a carbon filter one compared to a honda accord where it is just a paper filter?

I did, at one time like the honda filter when it was made by Nippon. When the filters got smaller and Fram and Filtech came into the picture, I started cutting open filters to see the filter media and the amount also the type of check valve.
A/C and Fram was the worst. Nippon is built good but hard to find, has a metal check valve and end caps. Looks like a motorcycle filter in a can. Wix/NAPA Gold and Purolator 1 have about the same amount of media. The purolator media is real thick. I have read that some people think it may be to restrictive, but I don't know. It may not be good on an old car with low oil pressure. Get a hacksaw and cut some open, I have a 99 Honda Accord, 96 Acura Integra, 04 Pilot and a 04 Acura TL. They all take the same filter. Most of the time I use the old larger one on all 4, but sometimes I get the smaller size. If you look around youll see the large filter came out on the 04 Pilot and Tl. About all you can get is the small one now. If you would like to know more check out this site.

1) No clue. I know that Fram's Cabin Air Filters contain charcol though.

2) The thickness of the media isn't exactly relevant to its performance. That, along with the amount of media, are two common misconceptions about the "quality" of the filter media, at least with regards to its efficiency and dirt holding capacity.

3) The metal end cap issue is really overblown. You can use any material you want. The paper endcaps actually allow you to install more media into a smaller can, similar to the Champion Labs E-Core concept. Endcaps "coming apart" do not always occur with the Frams...but they aren't as big of a deal as people say they are.

4) Larger is not better. A smaller filter containing more efficient media can easily outperform a larger filter.

Lastly, I'd challenge anyone to disprove my theory that any OTC oil/filter, when changed in accordance with the OEM drain intervals, will significantly shorten the life of the engine in comparison to a higher quality oil/filter being used (changed at the same interval) under normal driving conditions.

I'm sure OTC dino oil will do just fine with a 5k miles change interval (severe condition). But will it protect the engine up to 10k miles change interval (normal condition)?

Edit: I meant OTS (off the shelf).

Yes, but you'll sacrifice the level of engine cleanliness depending on the operating conditions...

Are you saying that any oil and filter you buy from the store should work the same as long as you perform oil change in the same interval as suggested in the manual?
