Oil/Filter

I've always done my own oil/filter changes (not so much to save money as to ensure that the job is done correctly - I've had a number of dealer and/or quick-lube failures over the years). As opposed to my '99 Accord Coupe with the oil drain plug and filter both located up front and within easy reach with a bit of right side lift, the TSX appear to present more of a challenge. With the drain plug at back-center (a service panel to be removed for access) and the filter up high at the rear precariously perched above the hot exhaust outlet, what is the recommended approach. My initial guess is that I should raise the entire front-end onto ramps (I have Rhino Ramps). Is that a proper approach? Any thoughts and/or suggestions will be much appreciated. Those who have done their own changes, please repond.

I just drive the car up on the ramps and crawl under. Plenty of room to reach everything. Just watch your arm and don't touch the top of the header

I jacked mine up on stands. That gave me plenty of room. BTW, I switched to Mobil 1 and installed the Fram Sure Drain. That should make my next change very easy--plus, I don't have to keep replacing the crush washer.

viff your half way there with the rhino ramps. they have a proper slope at 17% i believe to get right up the ramps with ease, and give plenty of clearance to do the job. the access door is no biggy, just a couple turns with a 10mm wrench and your in, then it's business as usual. the Fram SD-2 Sure Drain is pretty trick too, and very easy to install. Oh by the way, don't find out the hard way as i did that you cannot loosen that oem filter by hand. save yourself the hassle and invest a couple bucks in a ratchet type filter removal tool, saves loads of time ,aggravation and OUCH...... dammit, burns. Good luck!

CORRECT.

This is the same oil filter shared by all 4 cylinder hondas/acuras except the S2000.

Your approach is right. But for safely precautions, just make sure you have something to block your rear wheels so it doesn't roll off. If you're afraid of getting burned, just do it first thing it the morning so you won't get burned!!!
P.S. Just remember to always take your time and not to rush. Also, I CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH SINCE I'VE SEEN SOOOO MANY PEOPLE (even honda techs) DO THIS BUT MAKE SURE THAT THE DRAIN BOLT WASHER IS NOT STUCK ONTO THE OIL PAN. If so, just use a small flat head and pick it off.

Good luck!!!

Honda Oil Filters

Honda has two different part numbers for the new smaller oil filters. 15400-PLM-A01 and 15400-PLM-A02. The A01 is made by Filtech which is the brand of filters Honda has used in the past. The A02's are made by Honeywell which is part of Fram. I always use the A01s on my 99 Accord,02 Accord EX V6 and on the 04 TSX. I can tell a difference in the two just by looking at the threads and the materials inside. The Filtech is a lot better than the Frams.
