Oil Change this Early?
Oil Change this Early?
I only have about 3550 miles on my 06 and the MID is telling me its time to get the oil changed because its at 15%. Wtf, this early? Is this normal? Sorry if this is a repeat of a previous post but I just want an answer. Itd be easier if you just told me than to lock this thread or remind me this post has been posted before.
everyone else in the previous forums said 5k. but my car is like 8 or 9 monthes old with only 3550 miles so do you guys think its the time that is making the oil change or do you think i had a bad break in period which is making me change it at a small mileage?
Trending Topics
ck123, everytime i turn on the car, the damn MID goes "Maintenence due soon" or whatever it says. Its annoying as heck and i cant ignore it because what if its right. Should i really ignore it for a loooong 1500 miles? Im so confused.

danishj, I would check to oil stick manually when the engine cools down. My guess is the oil level is probably low. Just top it off with 5W-30 and wait till you reach 5,000 miles to bring the car in.
Disclamer: I drive a 2004, which doesn't have a MID.
Check the oil level again tomorrow morning. If the oil level is fine, don't worry about it. Wait till 5,000 mile. However, if you are really bothered by it, go ahead and change the engine oil, I guess.
Did you drive very little and take a long time to accumulate those milage?

8-9 months is a bit long. But it is not necessary a bad thing..., as long as you drive it regularly.
Right now I am leaning toward you should change the engine oil.... There should be a poll so people can chip in their opinion.
JTso is here, maybe you can ask the mod to add a poll.

See, the way I see it, following the rate you putting milage in the car, it will be more than 12 months for you to drive 5,000 miles. While 9 months is a bit long, 12 month is quite long. Hence, it is probably not a good idea to wait till the 5,000-mile mark.
The assumed annual milage for an average driver is 10,000 to 12,000 miles.
The assumed annual milage for an average driver is 10,000 to 12,000 miles.
A poll won't be much help as everyone has their own opinion. Why not follow the owner's manual? The manual recommends to change the oil at 5K under severe condition. If the oil level is fine and you have 15% oil life left, then just change it at 5K.

also, i don't see why he should wait till 5000 miles. he's breaking in a brand new car, there's possibly metal shaving/chips in his motor. you don't that cycling through your motor.
i say it would be best to change it now instead of waiting, but that's just my opinion.

danishj,
I also have an 06 tsx. I drove my car about 600+ mi (that is six hundred plus miles) past the MID message test "0%" it actually will go into negative numbers. my 1st change was around 4500 miles. The Service code ended up being A-1 by the time I had it serviced (adds rotate tires). So driving the car past will not cause harm/make it seize/explode/implode/or turn it into a VW. If you are going to the track next week then YES change it tomorrow.
and in response to zidenx's comment "why wait till 5000 miles...." Acura prescribes 10k miles for 1st oil change(for normal conditions); think they would subject a warrantied car to abuse if they have to foot the bill?
my response to your other question About which type of oil. Just use standard 5W30 (what's written in the manual)-but when you bring it into an Acura or Honda dealer you WILL NOT have to tell them which oil they will know !! and no don't go for synthetic for the first oil change.
you wanted an POLL alread had one about the MID:
2006 Maintenance Schedule.
take a deep breath, open up the glove box pull out the manual and take a peek. Good luck. -ed

Oil Change.
Folk their has been some discussion on when to change my/our oil? I went to the dealership and inquired with a certified ASE mech.
On TSX with the Multi Info Display. The system measures your driving by the following. Stop and Go/ Highway miles. Air Tempature, Oil consistency (Weight)
The system will usually trip the MID at 3500-7500 miles based on driving habits.
This is a smart system.
The non MID TSX are preset to come on at certain intervals.
If the MID is telling you to change your oil. Do it.

My MID came on at ~4300 and had it changed at 4500 miles. I think I even went a little early (MID still said 15%), next time I'll let it get down to 5%.
Other reasons to just get the oil changed:
#1 8-9 months to have "one change" of oil in the engine is a bit long.
#2 How do you drive? Is it city driving? Are you a "spirited" driver?
This does not mean that every 3500 miles you'll have to change your oil, this is just this time, remember you are still breaking that car in. Next time it may go 5500 or 6000 miles.
Mine came on at 3900, changed my oil, and now as im approaching 8000 miles, it shows 40%. So this is a smart system, and I will continue to follow what it says since it applies more to my case than the manual.
Also - according to the manual, oil should be changed every 6 months (if the mileage is less than advised)

For the first oil change I would do it. If you plan to keep 6 years or more, I would use mobil 1 syn. After that 7000 change is ok. I have used mobil 1 in several of my cars well pass 150000 miles and I did not worry about months. Sometimes I went 9 months or so before change. Car always ran like new till I just got tired of driving it.

As others have said, just do what the MID tells you to do regarding oil changes. When my factory oil got to 5% (nearly 5000 miles on the odometer), I made an appointment. By the time the oil was changed, the oil life reached 0% and I was "39 miles overdue" according to the MID. Is that perfect timing or what?
The system is conservatively programmed, so don't freak out when you see it hit 15%. Only under the absolute worst possible conditions will the oil be completely useless at 0%. If you have to drive your car beyond the "0%" point, I'd hope you're driving it to the dealer to get the oil changed, but if not, just take it easy. Allow the oil to get warm before you start driving quickly, don't rev the engine a lot after sitting in traffic, etc.

Junk knows what he's talking about.
Personally, I'd get it changed when the MM says 5% left. Why waste your money AND harm the environment by getting oil changed sooner than is necessary???
7500 Miles?
My dealer (Acura Carland, Gwinette, GA) told me the first oil change is at 7500 miles. Apparently this is for the bengine break-in? I'm not quite at 4000 miles, the MID reminder has come on and I have reset it. Even the maintenence reminder sticker says 7500 miles.
Has anyone else been told to go that many miles on a new car?
Has anyone else been told to go that many miles on a new car?
That is questionable. 7500 is a long ways to go on the "break-in" cycle. Was it the salesman or the service manager who told you this? If it was the salesman then I've got to say he was yanking your chain to get the sale.
What was it at when you reset it?
Best way to go about this, check the oil to see how "dirty" it is. If it's jet black or leaving grit on your rag, go get it changed.

I hope I can shed so light on this subject.
The oil change interval set by the manufacture (say six months or 7500 miles) is based solely on the need to bring down the overall cost of ownership and should be ignored if engine longevity is your goal. It can be argued that new oils are more durable then oil of old and can continue to provide lubrication beyond 3000 miles, but lubrication is only half the story. During its life cycle the oil is being attacked by engine blow-by and water condensation. The blow by gas mixes with the oil to form acid that will etch the bearing surfaces. The water condensation can case rust build up on the inside of the engine. This is more prevalent on low mileage cars (cars not driven long enough to burn off the water). The other big problem with extended change intervals is sludge build up; this will be a problem well past the powertrain warrantee. Two Japanese and one US manufacture are having problems with sludge build up in their engines causing blow motors. I have personally seen the sludge build up on and engine with only 50K miles that ran a 10k mile interval. I have also seen a rusted through oil pan on a low mileage engine that was only driven 3k miles a year and only had an annual oil change.
To sum it up,
If you do short trip driving you should change oil and filter every 3-4 mo or 3000 miles which ever comes first.
If you drive a lot of Hwy miles you can do 4mo or 4k miles.
If you have the Maintenance minder just cut the calculated value in half and change at 50%.
You can switch to synthetic as soon as you want (I know the old wisdom about waiting to 10k to break in the engine) the engine is broken in (as far as the oil is concerned at 1k miles providing you drove it correctly). Do not use additives to the oil and use a good filter with every change. The advantage of synthetic is it resists sludge and acid build up. I use it in my 98 merc with 130k and my wife’s low mileage Subaru (she only drives 3-5k yr). Both cars get four month changes regardless of mileage (unless they exceed the 4k limit). I just changed the TSX at 4400 mi with an oil life of 40%, a bit long but I was on the road when I hit 3k mi. I used Dino and a Honda filter but will switch to a Pure-One on the next change. I picked up the Honda filter so I could make sure I had the correct size filter wrench.
In my over 30 years of driving I have owned several new cars that were closing in on 200k miles when I got tired of driving them. I have never experienced an oil related failure. I have rebuilt several engines for friends and family that were not properly maintained.
An oil change with a good filter every 4 mo or 4k miles which ever comes first is the best thing you can do for your car.

I just got home here are the notes I jotted down while with the ASE Mech at my dealership.
1. The system is built with intelligence.
2. Based on Driving Conditions: Stop and Go , Ambient Air Tempature.
3. The system can trigger from a min 3k to a Max of 10k miles.
4. The system can measure contamination of oil. (Dirtyness) and (Fluidity)
5. The MID system measures over 25 pramiters.
6. Use Mobile 1 5 w 30 Synthetic oil on the 1st oil change.
7. The Honda Magic Oil will average btwn 3k and 7k for normal driving conditions.
Thats about it
