OEM NAV and depreciation
I love my NAV, and I always figured this to be true.
But it still blows chunks to read that this is becoming widespread reality...

If you pretend the car was two parts, one part the car, and the other part the Nav system, it’s natural that the nav system will drag down the car. The car will retain 55% of it’s value, while the Nav system, like a computer or cell phone, will retain almost none. Add those together and the overall value of the car will be less than 55% of the original value.
The fact that a NAV unit itself loses much more value than the car around it shouldn’t be a surprise.
Such is the price you pay for having something that obsoletes almost overnight to play with for the last three years.
Try buying a new portable NAV unit, or laptop, or cell phone today and selling it three years later – you’re not likely to get 55% back for that, either. Heck, I bought a flash drive a year ago for almost a hundred bucks – it’s on sale now in stores for $9.99!

Yeah, I took this into account when I went with Aftermarket navigation. My audio/video setup plans were a bigger reason why I leaned towards the aftermarket direction though.
It was hard to pass up the OEM Navi though. It's very nicely integrated with the dash and really helps to set off the interor. Just like most things, there are pros and cons for both.
