O6 TSX Range (miles) Question

I am new to this board so sorry if this was already discussed (looked around and didn't see it). I just got a 06 TSX with Navi about a few weeks ago. When I first got the car the range, or miles until empty said 378 with a full tank, the next time I put gas in same thing. Next time it said 307 when full, and this last time it said 288. Is it normal for the total miles per tank to change so quickly?

Hey nikkifrank,

Congrats on your new TSX purchase.

Here's my theory: When are you reading the range readout? Is it before you've pulled out of the gas station, or is it as you are driving afterwards? The range is based on the avg MPG you are getting. Naturally when you pull out of the gas station, you will probably be driving at city speeds, accelerating/decelerating often. So the range will be low since your initial avg MPG will be low.

Avg mpg and range will jump around a lot if you're on a new tank.

I don't think thats normal. Every time i fill up, the range is almost 400 miles. Do you only looking at it while accelerating?

Oh yeah, and welcome to AZ. Be careful what you read around here...you may actually do it to your car

Mine usually shows between 400 and 500 when I fill up. It doesn't seem to be entirely based on your "new" average because I've looked at it when it shows below 10 (right after pulling it out of the station) and the range still shows 400+.

It might be based on your overall MPG as well. I think ours averages around 29ish on the MID.

Is your overall mileage lower, say in the low 20's? And welcome!

Mine always shows about 420 miles after I fill up and if I get straight onto the highway on a long drive, in about 20 minutes it jumps up to like 480+ miles but if I stay within city limits, it reduces gradually as I drive & its never goes the distance it states initially as long as you're driving in the city.

450-490 at fill up mine shows...then when I'm driving it'll roll up to 520 or down to 420. I'll usually get 400 to the tank for my commute...more if I'm road tripping.

I am looking at it right when I fill up. I live in NYC so there is a lot of starting and stopping when I drive. Thanks for the warm welcome!

So it seems like 288 seems pretty low no matter what...?

This is what I see, too.

288 does seem low. How many miles are you getting per fill up? Are you using Premium? I think my lowest was in the low 300's in all-city driving, and I've been going 450+ on the highway during several recent trips. The highway trips still had 50 or more miles left before "E" (reminder light hadn't come on yet), but that's a good time to stop and fill up.

I get mid 400 to 500's by the MID. It's not accurate though.
In reality, I struggle to hit 400.

How many miles do you have on your car? If I'm not wrong, if it hasn't broken in yet, your mileage will be less than normal. Yet 288 seems pretty low.

I drive city miles...100%. I don't even bother looking at Range anymore...I usually get about 220 miles per gallon lol. The TSX was meant to be more of a highway car.

If your car is that new, then it's not broken in yet. Fuel mileage improves later on. And maybe your car is still getting used to you...

the avg is based on the last number of miles you drove with x gallons.

THANKS! Yeah, maybe the car is still feeling me out! I have only driven on the highway once since i got it... At least some other people are in the low 300's high 200's.... I was worried the car just didn't like me! I definitely don't have over 1,000 miles yet so guess I am still in the breaking in faze... I will keep checking on it and see if it improves.... Thanks for all of your responses... this forum is great.

you should expect a nice gain in mpg after break in. When i got my car is was averageing18mpg mixed, on my last tank i got 26mpg. My car has 2.4k miles now. Even the break-in smell is gone
