New Owners: Pay attention to manual when it instructs to check oil at every fillup!
I didn't have a disaster, but i just wanted to point out that i kept track up to my upcoming oil change. I lost approximately 2 quarts total over the first 6,000 miles.
The oil also is very black at 6,000 (Wanted to change it 1,000 miles ago, but the girlfriend hasn't had a chance to take it in - LAZY -).
anyways,
we do mostly combined driving, maybe 60% city. and i think we should have changed at 5,000.
good news is, we've been adding oil in, so it keeps it fresh to a point.
Just a general FYI. Check your oil at every fillup....it could be worse than mine if you drive it iin harsh conditions.
note:
the car was also garage kept in a heated garage, so climate wasn't a large factor.

Hmm...that's an awful lot. My car is going in for its first official scheduled maintenance this week and I'll be sure to have the service tech tell me just how much oil was left in there. Last time I checked during a fill-up, I was still well between the two spots on the dipstick, but that was about 600 miles ago.

Wouldn't keeping your car in a heated garage make any oil pan leakage worse, since the oil would be less viscous? That's the only way I could imagine the climate making any possible difference when the car is off.

That seems like a lot, 2 quarts. Mine doesn't burn any oil. There was another member that had a bigtime oil consumption problem. You may have a leak somewhere. I'd get it checked out.

As for losing 2 qts... it's not completely unheard of, but are you 100% sure you were checking the oil on level ground, etc...? If you were and you are sure it's down 2 qts., I'd definately bring it up w/ your dealer before adding oil next time.

well, it was less than 2, i said approximately. we checked and added along the way, and over the span of the 6,000 miles, we added almost 2 quarts. i've read that this is not uncommon, and we didnt have a leak, or there would be spots in the garage.
we have hard driving in north jersey. when she drives to work, it's back and forth, stop and go, towns, slow highway, etc.
the garage isn't insanely hot, it maintains about 65 degrees.
i don't think it's something to be concerned over, especially since the manual says it's to be expected in the first oil cycle.

< 2 qts over 6k isn't unheard of, but its good you were checking and filling it.

Yeah I noticed I was down almost a quart the 1st time I brought mine in for an oil change (I change every 3000). Now, I never checked it when I took it from the dealer and my car was used with 37k on it. This time I am keeping a closer eye on it and it looks like after 2k I was down about a half quart.
I asked the dealership about this and they said it is normal due to the high compression of the engine. And I had seen others reporting the same results here so I wasn't overly concerned. I do however keep an eye on it alot closer now. I check it every 1000 miles or so and add what I need to.

If this is your first 6000 miles, i.e. you only have 6k on the clicker, I'm pretty sure oil loss is normal. Manuacturers use a special blend of oil to help break in the engine and that will get burned up quicker than regular oil? So, if that's the case, then this should be normal. And the color; also because it is special oil and you're still breaking it in, i.e. there will be a high amount of metal bits in the oil and whatnot.
