New A6 -- Hideous
This thing is a step backwards if you ask me. Looks like a high-priced VW Passat.

It looks so much larger than the current car. Not the most attractive design from Audi. I've seen early photoshopped picture predictions and was expecting something different.
The Jetta and the A4 are similar in size so I think they share a platform. The same goes for the A6 and the Passat. The Phaeton and the A8 probably share a platform as well. Audi and VW are one of the best at platform sharing, second only to GM.

Well its definately not distinctive at all. I think it oddly resembles midsize volvo's as well, and I hate that new grill.
I agree it looks alot like the A8, only not as aggressive looking. I think too many companies are just designing different sizes of the same general model these days, and giving them different names. Everything looks the same now, Volvo's are very similar, Audi's, beamers, even Acuras share alot. I happen to like most of the designs I am speaking of, but let's see some diversity.

In fact, I don't think there is a company that is bad at it? Companies with two brands anyway.

Just like the TL is a fancy version of the Accord so is the A6 a fancy version of the Passat. The problem is that with the already high starting price of the Passat, the 10K+ extra for the A6 over the Passat seems a bit much. By the time you option it similarly, it will be more expensive than the RL - it's direct competitor now that the RL is AWD. In size and weight, the new A6 will be biggest mid-sized sedan - I can't imagine that will be good for performance nor handling.

"Things are even more incestuous at Volkswagen. The A platform plays host to the Golf, Jetta, New Beetle, Audi TT and A3, SEAT Leon and Toledo, and SS<caron>koda Octavia (the last four don't make it to America). Meanwhile, the C platform underpins the VW Passat, the Audi A4 and A6, and the SS<caron>koda Superb. It's even happening at the top end: The D platform is employed in the VW Phaeton and Bentley Continental GT and, in aluminum form, the Audi A8."

Actually, when you look at the car coming straight at you, it reminds me of the Argo's wave motion cannon from Starblazers.

I for one like the way it looks, plus I also like this information from the article:
Audi has dumped the twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6 engine option and will offer a standard 3.2-liter V-6 making 255 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque, and an optional 4.2-liter V-8 good for 335 horsepower and 310 pound-feet
So, the V6 is in the same performance ballpark as the new TL (a wee bit more torque, but also a few fewer ponies since it won't rev as high).

I'm a huge Audi love (my first car) and I think that gaudy chrome 'mouth' takes away from the main appeal of Audi design, which is to let the lines through the silloutte and design do most of the talking, not by adding some odd character cue. Audi designs have always stayed pretty mellow and simple, and that was the whole beauty of the thing. Everyone knew it was an up-scale car, but it kept things simple and pure.
I think Audi's lost touch with that philosophy... damn VW management can't do anything right with any of it's car lines.
Edit: The joke in one forum was "Does Chris bangle have a brother working for Audi?!".
Junkster, who would like the A6 if they gave it the A8 grill.

The grill is here to stay. It harkens back to the Auto Union racing cars that are a part of Audi's history. However, unlike BMW, if Audi starts to see drops in sales, they probably will do something about it quick. BMW has taken a hard line on the styling of its cars, but Audi likely won't.

I love the styling of these cars, I think they have some of the most timely designs in the car industry.
In fact, I've always loved Audis, but wouldn't buy them because of the reliabiliity issues.

the passat seen in the picture above is based off of the "new (for vw)" B6 platform.
The A6 on the other hand doesn't use the B series platform (It use to, but not any more). It uses the C5 (current 2004 A6 use the C5) platform. The new A6 to come out uses the C6. Then again, I keep seeing references back to the B6 platform. So I'm not 100% sure on the A6's platform.
