Need new key and FOB

Guys, I lost my original spare key and FOB. I was thinking about getting this one,
ebay but im not sure if i have to get the key itself programmed. Will the key work if i just get it cut at home depot or somewhere, or do I have to go to the acura dealer?

I believe you will need to get one from the dealership...as they have some sort of chip inside the key...which is where the engine immobilizer comes in to play.

I think there was a bar code on a small strip of paper that came with your keys? At least in Canada.
You will probably need that to get the dealership to cut you a new key + FOB.

Good luck!

the fob you can do yourself, the key you can cut, but it needs to be programmed which you cannot do. the key will open the doors and turn the ignition, but the chip embedded in the key will not start the fuel pump unless its programmed.

It's there. It's for the engine immobilizer.

Yep, you gotta go to the dealership. I recently had another key made. The dealership cut and programmed the key for about $40. Not sure about the key fob, though...

You can get a used remote off ebay ~ $25. The key and programming is around $150 and the dealer has to do it. Make sure to bring all your other keys in at the same time.

actually i meant i might sell my remote...
but you'd still need to get it programed......(I think you can program your own remote)
not the key fob.....dealer has to do that
or you can find lock key smith.....maybe they can reprogram it...

my suggestion, read the key fob mod, provide your valet key and cut the chip out of there for use in the Accord key, $50 and you have a brand new key, no programming needed

There are two seperate programming steps necessary:
1. programming the remote functions (door open/close, windows, trunk, panic). This you can do yourself
2. programming the unique chip in the key to work with the immobilizer. This the dealer has to do.

Some locksmiths with the proper equipment can program the immobilizer in the new key to start your car. Yes you can get it cut just about anywhere, but until the immobilizer chip embedded in the key is programmed to the security system in your car, it won't start the car. You can try taking the newly cut key and placing one of your working keys next to the lock cylinder. The security system will read the chip from the working key and the car should start. Take the old key away and the car won't start. Then you will see the difference. If you want a dealership to do it, try calling a Honda dealer. They should have the same equipment and lower labor rates.

Programming the key _FOB_ is a whole different thing, that you can do yourself.
