Quote: George, I used DVD Decrypter to backup my disc. I used verbatim dvd+r DL media as well. You don't have to change any settings in DVD Decrypter, you just have to choose to write the Navi disc to an .iso file then you can use Nero to burn the iso. In Decrypter, choose mode > iso > read. DVD Decrypter itself could also burn the disc by choosing mode > iso > write.
Ok I will give that a try.

Quote:

And like lando622 said, the media itself matters sometimes.

Just to rule it out.....If you are questioning whether the DVD ROM drive reads dual layer or not, you can check quickly and easily by popping the Navi Disc in your computer and check the amount of data on the disc. If its more than 4.3GB then its a dual layer disc and you'll know the DVD rom drive reads dual layer. You can check this by right clicking on your dvd drive and selecting properties. I'm guessing its dual layer though, those maps are a ton of data.

The NAV DVD's are definately dual layer I know that. What I was wondering is if the drives can read recordable dual layer media. For example here at work we have old CDROM drives for example that don't like CD-R's or CD-RW's etc... But that was just a guess and there are a number of other possiblities.

I will try DVD Decrypter.

Gotcha, I have am using a LiteOn CD/DVD lightscribe burner also. This could also be a factor actually. The success rates for making movie backups have been greater with NEC, LiteOn and Pioneer drives from what i've seen so the same may true for backing up our navi disc.

LITE-ON 16X DVD±R DVD Burner W/ LightScribe and 5X DVD-RAM Write Black ATAPI/E-IDE Model: SHM-165H6S *with latest firmware update downloaded after purchase!*

The burner could very well be another factor. I'm using an "old" NEC 3500 with hacked firmware (reads all regions, riplock removed, faster burns to some media), and had successful results.

RZA, your burner has everything (RAM, lightscribe, etc.)... nice gear. Looks like you could have pasted the model/description right from the Newegg site

BTW, on my backup, since I was playing away from home when I made it, I didn't bother using an ink-jet printable disk (none handy at the time) and put the Navigation disk label on it... it's only going to sit in the player and never see the light of day so I figured I didn't need to make it "perfect."

I'm definitely interested in buying the new disk as I live in an "unverified area" and the warnings are an annoyance. For $191, I'd hate to discover that nothing in my daily nav experience is updated in the latest disk, though my city is listed as having had some updates. Oh well, it'll be a gametime decision when I check the Alpine site tomorrow or over the weekend.

Have a good one.

if you want to send me your address or street, I'll check out if it is on the 4.55 disc next time I'm in the vehicle.

I know this is a bit further down the road... but would this work? Let's say the 07's roll out and they give you an 07 TSX as a loaner (for whatever reason). Could you take the NAV DVD outta the 07, burn it to a DL disc and use it for your 06?

What I'd like to know about any of the new DVD's that have come out over the years, are all of just mainly new maps plus some other minor changes? I mean is it possible to actually get new features such as real time traffic or something cool like that?

Thanks for checking this out for me. Greatly appreciate it!

For the benefit of others: My address doesn't show up in the latest version (but it's close) and our city was one of the listed updates. That's acceptable as our house wasn't finished until May '06. Google Maps, Google Earth, etc still don't reflect the last year or two (longer for Goggle Earth) around our subdivision, and it will likely take a couple years for all those details to catch up.

Even though the 4.55 disk says it is for 2007, the data on the disk is from 05. Not sure why there is such a lag from the actual data to production year. Even though obviously it is not 2007 data since it is out now and it is still 06, but rather the 2007 refers to the model year they ship with. so anyway it makes perfect sense that your house wouldn't be on here if it was built in may 06.

Is there anyone in Chicago/Illinois who can comment on whether it's worth upgrading from the version that came with the 04 TSX? Are the new POIs comprehensive? Are new developments covered (I've come across some that were not)? Is there better coverage for other Illinois towns (e.g. Champaign)?

I thought about it but haven't done anything yet. If anything I thought about buying it, backing it up then re-selling it in the black market section. I'm waiting on a response from another member on some POI's, might not be worth it to me to even get it.

I don't think they'd allow that in the black market section, but if anyone has a copy they wanna send my way for $10 drop me a PM.

TL 4.55 same as TSX 4.55, verify?
Just checking...my home is not on the 4.31 (I think) disk in my '06. Stopped by the stealership and checked a '07 TL with a 4.55 navi disk and my home is still not on it. Can anyone confirm the 4.55 '07 navi disk is the same accross all Acura platforms? Thanx.

You can check on this page...

Just call up the year and model of the car to see what version of the DVD it uses.

I did a quick check of all 07 models and it appears they all use the WHITE DVD (version 4.55) so yes.

It should work but you are going to lose coverage areas since that is a fairly old disk. How is the disk messed up?

you can burn a nav dvd easily...the problem is you cannot return an opened disk. Its just like the rest of the retail world, not sure why anyone would think it different. There are a few Torrent sites that have dvd disk rips you can download the images files and use a program like Alcohol to burn the disk. I updated mine this way, just cause I thought that 180 price was recockulous, especially when you can buy an update dvd for an HUT for $50 bucks...doesnt make much sense.

Im curious about the new Nav DVD as well. Before I drop 191 bucks for it, id like to hear from any NYC owners that have the newer version. Currently, there are a few areas that you cannot route to. For example, you cannot enter ANY address in queens. Does the updated version address this? Thanks!

Has anyone updated the DVD, Is it better than the original? We live in the Nashville Tennessee area and the updates don't really show anything near us (bummer). Does anyone know if it is just the orange DVD for the TSX?

I have updated my NAV DVD around 3 times since I bought it in 2003.

The Orange label DVD is for the 2004-2005 TSX (and other Acura models). The "White" DVD is for 2006-2007 TSX's (since they have a newer version NAV system). I assume the 2008 TSX will be the same, but I am not sure.

To find out what NAV DVD you need go to this page...

https://store.alpine-usa.com/Acuradv.../naviorder.php

1. Click on the "Find out what’s new for your vehicle’s navigation DVD update." link on the right.

2. On the next page put in the Model Year and the Model (TSX) and it will show you what NAV DVD you need and what updates there are.

I wouldn't buy one right now. I would wait a few months until the new versions come out. I have a 2004 TSX and bought the 3.60 version and the database was from June 2006 I believe.

Also keep in mind the updates they list are for expanded coverage. If you live in Nashville TN (and I certainly assume they have coverage for that city already) then they always make updates each year. I live in Columbus, OH (a city that has also had coverage) and they always make additions each year.
