Never mind the cold, it will not damage your paint...careless washing is the evil to watch for!

If you don't have a garage, you are pretty much don't have a choice but to leave your car in the cold. We are getting below zero weather with ice and snow as we speak, I am just thankful to have a garage for my TSX I always wonder if the extreme cold temperature would cost damage to the interior material....

Cold weather will not harm the paint, the interior, or anything else. It will reduce the effectiveness of the battery and increase the viscus of the oil (all but syn.); possibly making the car more difficult to crank. Generally, very hot weather is much worst on a car than very cold weather because it dries and bakes the interior, and also causes the engine, and transmission, to run hotter than desired under many driving conditions. I am talking in general; and not specifically about the TSX.

In case it is not obvious, do not use hot water to thaw any ice on the car; especially on any glass. To help clear the windshield, and perhaps doors, use a minimum amount of de-icing spray available at auto parts stores. Natually, it is a good idea to have a good coat of wax on the car before winter.

Cold is no problem. Too much heat and things burn out. One day, it was 110 F outside and the transparent plastic in front of the clock snapped in my TSX. The black paint didn't help...

Once after an ice storm I used a jug of hot water to unthaw the driver's side door of my Accord. It had literally frozen completely shut around the edges where the door meets the car. If I had yanked on the door handle any harder I would have broken it. This was the only thing I could think of to get into the car and I didn't have the time to wait around for it to warm up. Once underway, the heat from inside the car melted off the rest of the ice and all was well. I understand the logic of not putting hot water on cold cold glass and the risk of cracking etc. That particular day though, hot water did the trick for me.

Good information in this thread. I've been pretty worried about having a car at school in PA since we do get quite a bit of snow, but after reading the above posts about the effects of warm vs. cold weather on cars, I don't feel as bad. Hopefully the amount of time and effort I put into cleaning and maintaining my car will end up being enough to keep it in pristine condition for quite a few years.

Unfortunately, on a college campus, mother nature is not a car's worst enemy. It's the students. About a month ago, my friend had the driver's side mirror ripped clean from his brand new BMW 325xi by a group of drunk freshmen. I swear, if that had been my car, I would have killed someone

irresponsible students & un-respectful parking whores

Its true...its not the mother nature (hot or cold)

What I really worry about are the irresponsible students & un-respectful parking whores that damages and dings side doors/ side mirrors, hoods, glass, throw up on our cars, shopping cart bashing, gum dropping and key etching were the ones I always worry whenever I leave my car.
