I've had both, and I honestly can't say I've enjoyed the 6MT THAT much more. Sure its fun, but it doesn't completely change the character of the car IMO like some would argue. Its underpowered with either transmission.

Some just say it's automation, it's new technology, so it must be better..."purists" are just preaching out of nostalgia

So in the near future when they make cars that not only shift for themselves, but also steer and throttle and brake for themselves, where does that put people who want to actually still operate their vehicle, as opposed to just sit in it while drinking and eating and reading the paper and talking on the phone (not that they don't do all this in present day, right?) ?

All of us TSXer's have slow-ass cars, so a 1/2 second faster than slow is obviously not the highest priority of the MT folks. The preference is simply that it's more more engaging. A car does essentially three things - go, turn, and stop. Rowing the transmission is not just part of the "go", but actually part of all three. If, indeed you do enjoy the drive, why remove essential parts of the driving experience? Might as well go all the way and hop into the back of a cab and be driven around.

Your comment was as worthless as my reply.

It's really personal preference as many here will agree but after 4-1/2 years with my '04 6-speed, I must say this has been the most enjoyable car I have ever owned.

I really tried to "like" the auto but somehow it just didn't "feel" right, seemed more lethargic to me.

I can honestly say if Acura didn't offer the TSX with the manual tranny, I don't believe I would have bought it.

BTW, I also feel if more ppl learned how to drive a manual, there might be less accidents out there. You really do concentrate more on driving and less on being bored and playing with your cell phone, hair blower, razor, makeup, eating, curling your nose hairs, etc.

I just had the opportunity to drive a 1991 Mustang GT (5MT) and my TSX (6MT) back to back.

Man that 6MT is sweet, sweet honey! Sweet Jeebus it is wonderful.

OP, good luck with your decision - have you come to one yet?

I agree, but at the same time, you know there would be people that would still find ways to do such things (i.e. curling their nose hairs, :/ )

....then they would constantly be killing the engine, and if I was behind them, I would just get pissed off

Ahh, but that's the beauty of science... if you believe in Darwinism, these idiots would eventually die off (or end up killing themselves) and be replaced with more courteous, sane and rational drivers (at least in theory).

I kinda like one of the recent auto insurance commercials, I think it's Allstate or State Farm. "Maybe we should start treating other drivers as family instead of someone who needs to get out of our way." Sounds so Utopian doesn't it?

I guess most of europe is still in the 30's as they seem to prefer MT vehicles. I personally prefer MT but not because it is faster. I am not into racing just drive very conservative. I have owned vehicles with automatic transmission but as long as I can get MT I will get that.

thanks all for your input. im definitely considering an MT after weighing both sides and thinking about what my needs/preferences are.

i was extremely close on getting an MT TSX this weekend, but the dealer tried to bait and switch me on an 04 v. 05 (getting a used car). so at this pt, probably to most of your disappointment, my decision is to wait out for an 05 TSX or an 05 Accord Coupe (would want v6, but reselling might be tough bc ppl dont want to shell for gas).

you can weigh your thoughts on that! i'm not so sure about starting a new thread on the TSX v Accord v6....

^^FYI, if you're thinking about spending some money on performance upgrades you should know that the Hondata reflash is available on all the 04-06 models except for the 05AT.

5AT for me. hawaii has too much stop-and-go traffic. there's *barely* enough room on the freeways to open up the engine... i'm content with 5AT with the sportshift.

You might also consider that the TSX takes premium and IIRC the v6 accord will take regular. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Try these first:

Many more threads on the sedan model, but these were the two I found dealing specifically with the coupe. Enjoy.

Feel free to search for ANYTHING. There is ALOT of info on this site.

i have 6mt. i had an automatic altima before this and i have to say that mt is so much fun. but before you buy the car you have to think about couple of things. for starters you will noe be able to multi task when driving stick. meanig wont be able to eat and drive in the same time (which i kinda miss). As far as driving in traffic you get used to driving stick and after a short while you wont even notice your feet doing the work. plus another thing i think stick is safer especially when you need to slow down fast

The only thing that scares about the MT in the TSX... costs almost 2K to replace the clutch.... The last time I drove manual was when I was 16... almost 9 years ago, thus I'd probably ride it wrong and burn out the clutch in no time.

I heard the MT is silky smooth though.

Why would you have to replace the clutch, unless you're using the car on a track or at a drag strip on a regular basis? MTs are very low maintenance, even when compared with ATs.

I wouldn't describe the MT as smooth, it just has great engagements. Just went to the Auto Show out here, and tried out as many MTs as possible (granted, the cars weren't moving), but you could still feel the differences between cars. TSX and S2000 are still up there with the best.

MTs are not all about going faster, it's about the driving experience. As someone mentioned, if for you driving involves doing other things like eating, then the AT's is for you. Personally, I prefer the driving experience when I change my own gears. If I was ever lucky enough to get a supercar, it would still have to have a MT. No F1, DSGs, SSTs, or whatever the marketing folks decide to call them. What could be better that nailing your OWN heel and toe downshifts with a Ferrari V8 barking behind you? It all comes down to personal preference.

I did some research on it. Some people were complaining on edmunds.com that the acura dealerships were charging about 2K in parts and labor.

Maybe my next ride will be 7speed automatic or somthing but for now I prefer stick because my left leg is lonely without the extra pedal.

I pump my left leg into dead pedal whenever I drive automatic cars..

hahahaha. Same here. I went to Orange County in January and drove a Ferrari 360 Spyder and a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder for a couple of days (gotta love those OC exotic rental shops), both with paddle shifters, and my left foot was REALLY confused.

LOL, dealers will charge you well over $140 just to change the cabin air filter...
Except for warranty work, I avoid dealers like the plague - find a reputable independent Honda mechanic and save yourself some $$$.

Can someone compare the difference between the sport shift on the AT vs. the MT? Does using it make it that much closer to the MT? For me, it feels there's a slight delay that can be a bit annoying. I got myself a 5AT because, well, it was a steal of a deal on it (bought it cert. pre owned). If I get another TSX in the future, I'd definitely want to try the MT.

I do that plus occasionally reach for the "ghost" stick... that's really embarrassing.

Or worse, when I'm in the passenger seat and push on the "ghost" brake pedal b/c the driver's freaking me out... (especially bad when the driver is my wife )

With the sportshift, you're just triggering a gear change on the AT. If you find the slight delay annoying, it's probably because you're actually waiting for the tranny to get its work done. When you're using the MT, you're actually doing the work during the "delay" (clutch, changing gears, etc...). It's not as annoying if you're the driver - you might annoy your passengers depending on how smooth/not smooth you are.

MT MT MT all the way im a fairly new driver and my tsx is my first car.
Ive driven the new civic si and i think the gear box is grainy and unforgiving.
Ive also been in an 04 audi s4 and think that it doesnt give you enough feel
then theres my friend's Bmw 335 that is just was scared to drive.

learning Mt on the tsx was a breeze. once you get the hang of things you can drive completely smoothly and the car is very very nice and forgiving and when you want it to be, its a brute.

so youve already decided on a sports car, do it up with some justice you know =P

manual +1

Either way. If I'm in one, I'm sure I'd miss the other. Sportshift is a good enough compromise for me.

Been driving MT before my AT TSX, so I'm not just saying this. I got over the novelty of MT a couple years ago, so my daily driver is always gonna be AT but my next hobby car is going to MT.

I picked the 6MT over the 5AT. I found the 5AT to be an entirely different car than the 6MT. The 5AT is fine whereas the 6MT is FINE. The shift knob itself was 45% of the reason I chose the MT. It just reels right in your hand almost like it wants to play evertime you handle it. The other 55% has to do with how slick the sick gearbox (which might be the best one on the planet) is and how much more the manual involves the driver over the slushbox.
For me no contest. I live out in the country so not a ton of traffic to negotiate but we do have some very gnarley hills to negotiate stop and go's on and the 6MT is a breeze.

like everyone says its shifts so smooth... the smoothest I felt... the clutch is light... when I was lookin for my tsx no one had a 6spd is to test drive... I test drove an auto and that kinda pushed me away from the tsx but I ordered a 6spd and have no regrets..

Try to find another FWD or AWD entry luxury sedan with a 6spd manual as sweet as the TSX. My only other choice was a A4 Quattro but the value and reliability was not justifiable to the TSX.

The TSX MT is one of the best there is. Get a shortshifter and it makes a world of difference. Not like an RX8 or S2K but still good.

Didn't drive a TSX manual (though the RSX-S was quite fun to test drive the year before!). Knew I was going to be getting an auto so I didn't bother being tempted... Mostly because I play hockey and randomly get injuries where I can't use one of my limbs-- I wouldn't want to have to leave my car at the rink 'cuz I couldn't drive it! Well, that and we don't know where we're going to end up, and in the event it's a hilly place, on steep hills I still get paranoid in a manual... Our other car (WRX) is a manual though, so I still get to drive a manual every once in a while.

i would get the MT than the AT, but since my folks and my gf at the time didn't know how to drive MT, i got the auto.

btw, i've heard that a TSX with MT is harder to sell and is lower in resale value than a TSX with AT.

^^ I would assume it would be harder to sell just because a lot of people do not drive MT's. I will also assume that MT's will become even harder to sell in the near future. Since to my unresearched knowledge the number of MT cars released in the market today is diminishing.

I love my MT, and i do not think I will get another car without it, because if i am driving an automatic, i find myself shifting gears in other obscure places that are not inside a vehicle. Like when trying to pass sidewalk traffic when you are walking in NYC.

The used 6MTs get snapped up almost instantly around me. When looking for my car there were two separate occasions where the dealer called me about a car on the lot and before I could make it over there, it was sold. I bought my car within two hours of it being traded in. The previous owner was still at the dealer picking up her new TL-S when I was signing the papers to buy her old TSX.

I'm not even remotely concerned about selling it.

My civic was really fun with the manual (it's been a month and I still can't believe it was stolen), the TSX isn't nearly as fun imho.

Unless it's a "purists" car like the s2000 I think I'll be joining the AT camp in the future. The plan is to keep the TSX "forever" though.

You're saying you have a 6mt TSX and you'd rather have the 5at? That's honestly the first time I've heard that on this site.

Driving any low torque car without a stick shift is just painful.

Yeah, I've got 2k miles on the car now and unless my clutch is messed up it's really "vague." Finding the engagement point is close to impossible, as I find myself having to slip it more than I'm accustomed to when taking off from a stop..

I've never driven an automatic TSX. I might change my tune once I drive one, but as of now I'm thinking I'd survive with the 5AT......
