Max speed for 5AT = 214MPH

With no wind resistance, 5AT TSX will top out at 214 MPH and 6MT at 171MPH.

You're misreading the chart. The numbers in red w/ asterisks are only based on what the gears will turn in free space based on their ratios. The car won't actually reach those speeds in real life because drag loss will choke the car long before you get to those speeds. Thanks for making me smile, though.

Wow...214 for the 5AT

Why is that the 5AT would top out at a higher speed than the 6MT
40 mph is a big difference.

I wish i had an 0.566 gear for my sixth... This really illustrates how much taller it is than the 6MT's 0.659.

The 6MT's top gear is too damned short (numerically high)...

Its because the 5AT is geared much taller. This figure is meaningless though because we dont live in a vaccuum.

So in reality, the AT has a higher top speed?

Uh, right, assuming there's no wind resistance.....

Acura claims that both of them are limited by drag (wind resistance).

So yeah, in a world with no drag (which includes, I presume, no rolling friction from tires, or any other kind of friction) the 5AT would top out at a higher speed. That is, the 5AT at redline and in top gear goes faster than the 6MT at redline in top gear.

All of which is a nice way of saying that the 5AT is geared more aggressively. In the real world, it doesn't mean the car can go any faster.

Doesn't the TSX have one of the lowest coefficients of drag? If so, why would the drag-limited speed be so low, esp the 6MT?

My old 2L GTI could easily hit 180mph with 115hp.

I believe drag is only one of the components of wind resistance.

Doesn't geared more aggressively mean the gear ratios are close together? So, the MT have more aggresive gearing than the AT?

Back to reality for a minute....

Doesn't the 6MT reach max speed in 5th?

The 6MT is geared more aggressively. It has shorter (higher ratio gears). The 5AT has taller (lower ratio), less aggressive gears.

So ya if you redlined 5th gear in a 5AT you would be doing 214mph. But this will never ever happen on the planet earth.

As for which has the higher top speed on earth, I would guess its the 6MT since it will be making more torque at the wheels (because of the higher gear ratio) at or near the air resistance limit.

can someone tell me why this measurement was made in the first place? what a stupid thing to measure. and top speed that we cant reach for too many reasons. the main one being that the cars engine wont speed up after a point way the down lower.

seems meaningless to know this info or worry about it

Obviously both MT and AT can't reach those top speeds. However, I thought I post the site because its interesting to see how much these trannys differ. For example, I didn't know you can reach 80MPH in 2nd gear in AT and in reverse, AT is ~2x faster than a MT.

VW limits top speed to 130mph. If you remove the speed limiter with an aftermarket ECU, you can go much faster.

TSX's limit is 147 mph.
