Maintenance Minder System Breakdown

Hey guys,

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere on this site, but I can't find it because the search feature omits the important keyword I'm looking for (A1 or B1).

Bottom line, is there a thread that breaks down the A1, B1 and whatever else service codes the MMS spits out?

The Maintenance FAQ is a great resource but there is not correlation to the service codes.

Yeah, I've found threads that say 'all the A1 service is an oil change' and 'the b1 is an oil change and tire rotation'. That's great, but I would prefer to see the entire breakdown of what the stealership's service department does. I can do the services myself, but time is money (goes both ways) and I'm short on time.

Thanks in advanced.

Going from memory here, but I think 'A' is oil change, 'B' is oil change plus checking a bunch of things out, and '1' is rotate tires. You can check what all these mean on the owner's link website owners.acura.com.

A= replace engine oil (no filter)

B= replace engine oil and filter, rotate tires, inspect front and rear brakes, check parking brake adjustment, visually inspect: tie rod ends, steering gear box, and boots, suspension components, drive shaft boots, brake hoses and line (including ABS), all fluid levels and condition of fluids, exhaust system, fuel lines and connections

1=rotate tires

The Maintenance Log booklet shows it all pretty clearly.

I had noticed that it didn't mention changing the filter, but just assumed that changing the filter along with the oil was to be assumed. Therefore, whenever I've gotten the "A" reminder, I've asked for an oil and filter change. Is the filter change overkill then?

Also, I've just gotten past the point where I got the "B" reminder. To me, it reads like "change oil and filter, rotate tires, and then do a bunch of looking around for an additional ton of money". My car's pretty new still, not high miles, I'm not driving in any harsh environments, so I just asked for the oil change and tire rotation. What's your take on this, SERVICEADVISOR?

shit, you mean that each time that i brought my baby to the dealership and tell them i need oil change, that's exactly what they're doing? Literally, oil only change without oil filter swap out?! in canada, it's understood that oil filter comes off too!

if so, i need to specifically ask for oil and FILTER change too then!

well any dealer i've ever been to, in the reynolds and reynolds system, its called an LOF [lube oil filter] so when you ask the service guy for an oil change, if he doesnt give you the most expensive option, he's not doing his job.

Also... try READING the receipt/work order when you get it back. says exactly what they did.

My invoice always reads oil and filter change for 'A' service. I might start checking that they actually change the filter now though.

my dealer doesnt even vacuum eventhough they mark it as done each time so i might check too. Hell the last time i went in he said he was going to rotate the tires and didnt notice they were brand new on my new 18" HFP wheels.. they aren't that bright there.

OP: ... if you don't have the manual, read the FAQs, the owners' manuals are online.

Others: read your repair invoice, fer crying out loud. Be specific about the service your manual calls for, and check that they did it. This is not rocket surgery, y'know.

I asked my good friend, a acura service manager about their procedure for oil changes. They change the filter on all oil changes and do an inspection of the car.

It may not be "rocket surgery", but could it be.... BRAIN SCIENCE ?

I wouldn't presume that. IIRC, the 2004 OM recommended oil changes every 10,000 miles, and oil filter change every 20,000 miles.

we always change the filter on a "A" service but the factory says it's not required. The most important components of a "B" service is oil/filter change and brake inspection.

Reynolds and Reynolds op codes are set up by individual dealers and are not set up by the factory so we can include or subtract any component of a package service and add or subtract set cost or labor charge. More importantly most of us are not trying to rip you off we actually try and advise you on wants best for your car, yes are labor rate is more but you get what you pay for most of the time. if not that request a refund if we screw up, you will usually get it. (try that with an independant shop). Also try not to be so cheap with your car, that's like going to having your family doctor try and do surgery on your leg so that you don't have to pay extra for a specialist to do it right. (why take the chance?) Or better yet buy a bus pass, it's cheaper than owning a car and you never have to worry about maintenance. Too many people buy nice cars but don't want to or can't afford to pay the cost to operate them. (Champagne taste on a Beer budget).

SERVICEADVISOR: I surely hope you aren't calling ME cheap lol.. i drive 57 miles to the dealership i bought the car from to have an oil change. Hell i probably pay more in gas to get there and back than the oil change costs. I get an employee discount from my dad, but still.. i could still save money by going to a local shop instead. Dealerships are there to make money, not out of the kindness out their heart, so to say you aren't there to charge the most possible is a joke. Its called business.

I am sure where your dad works is also there to make money. It is nice to be able to get discounts. I am a former resident of PA, now living in NC. When I visit family and friends in Pa I take my tsx to the acura dealer to get it serviced. My good friend is the service manager so I either get free or good discounts on the service.

Filter changes should be done every other oil change. Filters last longer than oil. I tend to forget when I replace it, so sometimes I replace it every oil change...lol

no, we all need to save money where ever we can but it's just when it comes something important like your car we don't want to be frugal to the point we are cutting your cars life short or risking further damage that will cost twice as much to fix in the end. that's all ,I wasn't slamming you at all sorry if i came across that way. as for me personally I treat everyone like i would want my mother treated, i do everything by the book and do not cheat anyone. Most of us are the same as me but there are some bad apples, thats what the B.A.R. is for
