Lowest Temperature shown in display.

Hi all,

It's starting to get cold again and I was thinking about how low the temp gage can reach. Lowest I've seen on mine is -30 degrees celcius (~-22 F), even though the temperature was -40 outside. I wonder if that is as low as it will reach or if the sensor is getting some heat from the car. This happened many times, under different conditions -- highway, city driving and parked. Anyone ever see it go lower?

Good point. I haven't specifically checked. Seems like I read the section and don't remember seeing anything about how low it reaches. Will check.

I'll go ahead and say that's colder than mine has ever gotten, so you're in the lead so far.

In most applications, the display will either fix on a low number or blank out with -- when the temp is out of range. There could also be a diff between Canadian and US models.

Man, when it's this cold, do -30 degrees and -40 degrees really make a difference?!

"The temperature sensor is in the front bumper. Therefore, the temperature reading can be affected by heat reflection from the road surface, engine heat, and the exhaust from surrounding traffic. This can cause an incorrect temperature reading when your speed is under 19mph (30 km/h)."

My guess is that because the outside temperature is so low, the heat produced by the engine would be relatively more significant and therefore offset the temperature reading by this much.

"If the outside temperature is incorrectly displayed, you can adjust it up to +/- 5 degrees Fahrenheit warmer or cooler."

When it hits -40, it displays "get me out of here, dammit!"

Wasn't the sensor is on the dash that close to the windshield? BTW, I am sure the display won't go lower than -273 degrees

yes, read the manual. U can calibrate and adjust it up to 3 degree i think. These things are not always 100% accurate out of the box and need some tweaking. Mine was off by 2 degrees C.

Tweaking is not the problem that I have. It seems to be fairly accurate until it gets low, and doesn't read below -30C.

RMATIC09, was that -35 you saw? Mine doesn't go that low.

ianS, I bet you are wrong. Absolute zero is -273.15C or 0 Kelvin. That's as low as it can go!

Of course the car wouldn't start at that temp...

Wait...what am I talking about? It is a Honda after all...

I think you're confusing the internal sensor with the external. Internal temperature at -30 degrees wouldn't be too comfortable I suspect.

And yes you're right, below -273.15 degrees Celcius would be an out of this world temperature.

Mine went down to -29C as far as I can remember, and I don't think it could go lower. My clutch was sticking... do you have 6MT and notice that at those temperatures?

I think RMATIC09 is in fahrenheit, but I don't know whether that's colder or warmer.

The outside temp guage seems to only show integers, so you'll never see -273.15. Actually it seems to only have 2 digits, so I don't think you'll see -273 either.

The US version defininitely has 3 digits, so maybe you would be aware that you've reached that scientifically miraculous temp

If the outside temperature is -273.15C (absolute zero), the last thing you should be worried about is what the dash reads.

Yes the US version has 3 digits, but the first digit can only be a one. Therefore, you could never see absolute zero. Of course, I wonder what the TSX would drive like at absolute zero...

And probably not well when the molecules that make up the car don't even vibrate. Talk about cold start!

Hey, I almost forgot, when I went to embark on my ascent, this guy comes out and makes sure that your car meets the rules for safe travel on the ascent/descent.

One of the rules is...............

NO 5ATs ALLOWED!

Actually, any car with an SS tranny...............

Why???

Also, I'm sure the guy who will get the coldest reading is the one who lives in the North-West Territories... I forget what his alias is. Let's have a contest for the coldest temp photo... In Ottawa we should be in the running.

As I don't own a 5AT, I'm not entirely sure how it works, but I assume that you can't leave it 1st. I don't think there's a position in the normal shift gate, and when you go to SS, you could pull it back to 1st, but under the right circumstances the car could decide to go into 2nd on its own.......
