Life Expectancy of Xenon HIDs...

What is the approximate life expectancy of Xenons? I pretty much drive every day and use my headlights, oh, about 45 minutes to an hour each evening driving home.

I guess hat I'm really looking for is 'do they last longer or shorter than normal tungsten bulbs?'

5 years or until just before you leave for a big azine meet!

When you get a pink light for a second when turning on, thats the imminent death warning
Replace bulbs in pairs
see josh at excelerate for Kaixen bulbs

Go ahead and drive with your lights on for safety- its worth the investment in your own life!

Don't worry about using HID too much, they have a much better life expectancy than normal halogen bulbs and they are much brighter too. Well, not as bright as halogen bulbs under the sun, but still very helpful during the night.

What determines the lifespan of HID bulbs is not the number of hours they've been on, but rather the number of times they've been turned on.

This is why I hate to flash people now during the daytime when my lights are not already on. Two or three flicks in a second and that's two or three closer to the ultimate end. Use the flashers regularly and I think you stand to shave weeks or months or years off your bulbs. I wish that the "flash" function were wired so that only the halogen high-beam bulbs would light up.

I always thought that was how the flash function was wired since the HID's take too long to turn on for flashing?

Unfortunately, if all lights are off and you turn on highbeams:

Highbeams > ON
HID > ON

Precisely. So between that fact, and the resulting excessive switching on and off if the HIDs, there's really no reason that the low beams need to flash as well. High beams alone would have been sufficient for flashing purposes.

It would have been much better if the high beams only came up when flashing!

I remember my drivers ed instructor (HILARIOUS guy btw) gave us this lecture on why he hated people who flash their lights, thinking they're all friendless douchebags

So, I see some replacement Xenon bulbs on eBay -- any reason to stay away from those? THey SAY they are OEM and ring in at 90 bucks. Any reason to get those or others?

The search function can be cumbersome. Don't give up on one try. I used the very same words you have in your title to search for and find that article.

^ The administrator has limited a single user to 1 search only in 60 seconds. So if you have to try 5 searches, that's five minutes of dawdling. I can understand load-balacing the forums during high-traffic periods, but that's ridiculous -- it discourages the use of search.*

*Oh, and BTW, "Find more posts by..." is also a search function.

"Search first" is a good suggestion usually, but with that setting, the admin reaps what the admin sows.
