Lease Return -- Can you strip the car?

My friend is returning his 06 TSX early next year and wanted to know if I wanted an extra set of all-weather mats. His car came with the weather package (all-weather mats, splash guards, trunk tray) and some other dealer doo-dads, all of which he intends to strip off the car and give away or sell.

Will this present a problem with Acura on the lease return. Do they know or care if the car was priced and delivered with these options? I can understand factory-installed options are noted and part of the Monroney sticker, but what about dealer-installed options?

Your friend will have to take a look at the original bill of sale which will have listed extras (flooormats, wheel locks, etc.) that came with the car that he/she was charged for. Most likely the dealership will be looking for that stuff when the car is returned.

If it came with the car when he picked it up from the dealer, you must return it with the car.

Thanks for the heads up. I will advise him to leave everything in that came with the car...even if the carpet mats are still in their plastic wrap! (The all-weathers are on top of them.)

It does make me wonder about the CPO cars though and how thoroughly they are checked out by Acura. Around summer, when gas prices skyrocketed, he started using regular gas, not premium. He figures why pay for it when he is returning the lease car soon anyway.

And he drives it like a banshee these days, knowing that he's turning it in soon.

I pity the poor soul who buys it as a CPO....

schmeh. i doubt they'll care if the all weather mats are in there... as long as the factory mats that came with the car are there and the car is in good shape

The price guaranteed on the lease is for the vehicle from what i understand, not the vehicle with all it's options. For example, is a car with all weather mats worth more than one without? I doubt it. Either way, your buddy needs to realize that if driving like a mad man ruins certain components of the vehicle, like brakes, suspension, etc... he can be held liable for repairs since the lease is only good for 'normal' wear and tear.

Just my opinion of course... but it doesn't make sense for a dealership to ruin a ponential repeat customer over $100 floor mats (which they'll remove and replace and recharge most likely) or $39 wheel locks which they'll throw away if you forget to give them the key to it.... no different for a trade. Those things don't raise the value, nor do they remove from the value unless every other car has it.
