Is keying (vandalism) new cars common?

I'm curious how common the keying of new cars is. My black TSX is less than a week old, and despite the winter snow storm we had to inhibit pedestrians, the passanger side was badly, deeply keyed over the weekend right outside my house. I always assumed our neighborhood was safe, and no one ever touched our older car since we've been here. The newness must have attracted vandals to get their kicks.

On a related note, what's the best options for repairing the paint back to new? Touch it up at least for the next few months and take it to the body shop for a full job in the Spring, or go ahead and have the body shop fix it from the start with the risk of it happening again?

The penalty for keying should be death.

It should (death penalty)... my hybrid was keyed within 3 month of owning it.

A body shop is the only way to insure you won't get rust. As for protecting your car against the candidates for severe punishment, I suggest a Louisville Slugger and a long weekend night. Other than that, hopefully they will get tired and move away from vehicle vandialism.

that's horrible. sorry to hear it, but I think touch-up paint and polishing over the keyed scractches will minimize the appearance of the scar.

I'm so sorry to hear that this happened to you.

My sister bought a brand new Audi A4 1.8T. She had it for a grand total of three days before it got keyed.

What can I say? I can't even begin to understand why somebody would do something like that.

I'm sorry to hear about all of those who have been victims of keying.

It's hard for me to understand why people do that, but how can one be logical regarding a sicko, demented fool? A mentally healthy person doesn't perform vandalism. What's worse is that these are the same scum who breed more scum.

Oooops, I can almost hear it now from all those who defend or justify bad behaviour, like vandalism: Oh, it's really art. Or, it's for some untold generations-(or centuries-) old grievance, exploitation, or oppression! A slap on the wrist would be appropriate. Or, it's YOUR fault for parking your car in the way of the perpetrator's--ooops--the poor, oppressed, and exploited one's key! Your success is oppressive and reinforces their stigma!

Eeew, that stinks! I think I want to spit right now.

gcolby03, I am just so sorry to hear about this - it makes me sick to the stomach! I just don't know what kind of people would do this... maybe they are just jealous? I also have a NHB TSX that is just one week old, so I totally feel your pain! It is also my biggest nightmare too - every time I get off work, I go and get my beloved TSX, and I must go and make sure that there is no dent or any act of vandalism on my TSX!!!

Maybe the NHB TSX is just so beautiful and head turning that it attracts attention... but then that does not justify any vandalism!!!

It's quite simple. We have created a materialistic society that, unfortunately, creates envy and jealousy in some of those who aren't able to afford the things that we can. We also have millions of small minded folk who don't care about the consequences of their actions and happily go about vandalising cars that they can't even get inside of at the auto show. I'm sure there is the patriotic keyer, with an intense pride in Ford, Chevy or whatever. His targets are the "Jap" and "Kraut" cars that are for "rich assholes" or "city folk". Sadly, the cowards who affect our lives are rarely caught. Even if they were, the punishment would be near to nothing in Canada and a ten year sentence in the U.S.

the death penalty's good. but texans are already on top of that. i suggest something similar to a chinese torturing technique. key the f'ck out of the bastard all over. that'll teach him.

Sorry to hear. My previous car was keyed on the third week. Thus I didn't try to keep my TSX shiny.

One way of punishing, scratch the key real hard on the perpetrator's car to make it hot, then shove it up his arse, and twist. Then shove it all the way in.

Sorry to hear about it.

To make you feel better (hopefully), I once caught the bassturd in the act keying my TL. His excuse was "you're a rich boy, you can afford it". Far from it, I bought it used at a good price (around $12K). That isn't rich by any stretch.

I gave him a choice, either the cops will "escort him" or he will give me his license, address and phone number and give me a check for 150 bucks. I thankfully had a digital camera in my car at the time so I got a good snapshot of him in case he tried anything funny. Basically he was a dumb kid with nothing better to do.

Oh and I called his parents after all of this was done.

I'm glad you were able to catch him in the act. Hopefully he learned a lesson. I'm sorry to hear that so many of you have had this happen to you. Unfortunately, as long as there are new cars, there will always be a few kids who find vandalism of this sort to be entertaining.

An amazing example of restraint and level-headedness. I think most people would have trouble keeping themselves from taking a tire iron to his head - and that's not the right thing to do... I hope he learned his lesson.

Yes this unfortunately happens a lot. Whether out of envy, being drunk (I've seen it happen), or people with new cars being stupid and taking up multiple parking spots.

I actually back in high school keyed up this guy's car when I was with my mom and we were waiting for a few minutes for these people to put in their bags and pull out. This a$$hole saw we were waiting and he quickly zoomed in and took our spot. I rolled down the window and cursed at him (with my mom in the car). He looked at me and shrugged and walked off. BAD MISTAKE. I keyed up his car. Juvenile, yes, but he sure damn deserved it.

Fast fwd 10 years later, another incident.... this shopping plaza's parking lot was full and some a$$hole decided to park his new SUV in the middle of FOUR parking spots. If i was back in high school, he would have gotten his car keyed up, but I restrained myself and kept my cool and kept on walking.

Protect your car as best as you can: Don't piss off other drivers by taking their parking spot. Park your car in your garage as much as you can. Don't take up two parking spots if the parking lot is crowded. Don't make your car stand out, try the best to make it blend in with other cars.
