Just hit a deer

while driving home tonight a deer ran across the road and I didnt see it. It hit my left side and front bumper, my headlights are out and the fenders and door panels are knocked in. However, my question is, was i supposed to stay at the scene of the incident and call a cop? I ended up just driving the car home but am now woried that my insurance will have a hard time covering the damages. Ill post some pictures in the morning.

State Laws vary from state to state. They recommend you remain in your car at the scene if possible, call the police to file a report to be given to your insurance company.

They say in some areas, deer collisions occur so frequently, an officer may not be able to respond to each one, but you should still report the incident for insurance purposes.

Also do not try to remove the deer carcass from the road. Some may appear dead but are alive and may cause injury.

When I hit a deer, we went on our way and I didn't have any trouble with my insurance. Once they saw the damage (and the deer parts in the grill) they never questioned what it was. I think you should be Ok. I am glad that you seem OK - hitting a deer can be very dangerous.

Funny story about the carcass though. We were in Greenville Alabama when we hit the deer. My wife was driving my car (was a Toyota Celica at the time) and she was very shaken. This blue Datsun pickup pulls up behind us and these two guys jump out. I kid you not, they were both in overalls, no shirts, one shoulder strap undone. I immediately think Deliverance. I step out and my wife locks the doors thinking I'm insane. One steps up and smiles exposing all three of his teeth and says, "ya'all want the deer?". So I'm thinking, you want the roadkill? But, I don't to offend these gentlemen, so I actually walk to the back of the Datsun where the carcass is (intestines and all) and give it a hard look like I'm really making a tough decision. I tell them no, they can have it. They're all grins as they jumped into the truck and pulled away. I swear to you I thought I heard a banjo play as they drove off. Anyway, it was Christmas Eve - hope they had a good dinner and ate around the TOYOTA imprint on the leg.

Yeah, I was going to link to that too. If that ever happened to me, I would
just say bye bye to my car and get a new one...

I'm going to propose to you that this is a fake photo. If the deer strikes the windshield like it looks from the outside, the pattern of the blood on the inside does not match the direction it should be going. For example:
- There's blood all over the driver seat and the headrest, with no visible outline of the driver (and there should be).
- There should not be that much blood on the dash board and behind the steering wheel. For this to happen, the deer hitting the car at say 50 mph in one direction has the blood move 3' in the opposite direction to strike the dash and steering wheel?
- There is blood all over the rear seat behind the driver. If the impact was at the windshield, the driver seat would have shielded most of the rear seat (or at least left an outline).
- Looking at all that blood in the trunk area, anything moving with that much force to get that far into the car would have taken the head off the driver.

I'll buy it was initially a deer strike, but I'm thinking someone doctored the car up to make it look like this.

Exactly what I was thinking...the driver's headrest is covered with blood, as is the top of the driver's seat...FAKE!

a hit a deer in my Nissan Altima a few years ago.. i was driving to PSU for the weekend, was literally 5 minutes from my friends place and i hit one going about 40mph. i didn't call the cops, i immediately called geico, they asked once in the beginning if i called the cops and i said no. they didn't bring it up again, set up the appt for estimation and repair then thankfully could drive away.

i dont like cops and didn't want them near me or my belongings

A deer ran into my car. Massive damage to my front driver's side panel and door. I couldn't even get the door open. I didn't stay at the scene, because deers tend to run in packs, plus to bitch got up and ran off. I called my insurance company (State Farm) the next day. They didn't even ask about a police report. All they said was it was covered under "natural disasters" and was anyone hurt, plus 5 follow up calls inquiring if anyone was hurt.

Sorry about your car.
At least you're fine. I know that's no consolation for the car though

I've hit two, but luckily not in my TSX, my good ol' 2000 Grand Am was able to chalk them up. Didn't stop for either...too pissed/shocked/traumatized.
#1. Middle of Uhwarrie National Forest (Central NC) late at night. Cruise set at 60 notice a couple deer to the left (heading left) and then BAM!! Sonuvabitch was coming out of the ditch to the right. Never even hit the brakes. Busted bumper, "pinched" fender and broken foglight. Insurance fix.

#2 (this one is kinda funny)
Driving with gf in car on a country road, again relatively late. Heading down a hill and when I get to the bottom there are two deer crossing the road *left to right* (don't know why I didn't see them earlier, thank God for HIDs on the TSX).
I don't panic. Foot off gas, steer *not swerve* to the right. Next thing I hear is the driver's side mirror smashing against my window. Thankfully I didn't have my window down or it prolly would've broken my arm. The only damage from that was a very small dent on top of the fender (I think his head bounced off it) and the destroyed mirror. Didn't even bother the insurance company for this <$100 to fix
