I hate FM modulators!!!

I've used my iPhone with my 1999 TL using the Tape deck, it worked wonderfully. But now that I have a 2004 TSX I'm forced to use those damned FM modulators. Doing some research I found the following:

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_581PA15...ce.html?tp=120

A little pricey, but its only $70 more then the best FM modulator.
If anyone has experience or advice, I will appreciate it.

Lots of people have used that or a similar device made by a company called DICE (this is what I have). The sound is good but both devices can behave a bit oddly. For instance the DICE device I have sometimes fails to be recognized by the car so that I cannot switch to the correct input (it pretends to be a CD changer) to use it. I have to shut the car off and start it again to get it to (maybe) work again. I think they may have fixed the problem in the current version of the hardware though.

So relatively simple to install by myself?

Yeah it's pretty simple. I think you have to lose the XM (if you have it, I don't) though. All I had to do is pop out the storage bin under the stereo and fanangle the connector from the DICE box into a port on the bottom of the stereo. The only hard part is doing it by feel since you won't be able to see anything. Not too bad though. I went the extra step and routed the wire through the center console so I could have my iPod in the arm rest compartment. Most people just run it into that storage bin.

I got the barest of bare bones TSX. No XM, though I did do XM on my TL, but found that I used my iPhone/Zune more then XM, so I didn't care about losing it by switching to the TSX. Cool, I think I'll give it a shot.

Pulled the trigger! I have a friend with a 2003 Accord EX-V6 that I know will want one when he see's mine. Will it be the same procedure for that car in case he wants one?

I believe it's pretty similar in all the post 2000 or so Hondas. All the stock stereos have the same connector on them for the CD changer. Getting to it might not be as simple however.

How did you get the wire to come through the bottom side of the arm rest compartment? Did you drill a hole?

Anyway, I had to laugh when I read this thread because my brother just took his FM transmitter back because he thinks it sucks.

Yeah, I drilled a hole right next to where the cigarette lighter is and then put a rubber grommet in it after I pushed the wires through. It came out very clean and professional looking. If I could have put some sort connector in there so that I didn't have to have the wire coiled up in the bottom of the bin when I'm not using it, it would be ideal but alas, that's not a simple task.

I drilled a hole in the top of the storage bin so the wire comes into the storage compartment and my iPod stays in there. Cord is more than long enough to pull out and change playlists and such if need be and the hole is completely hidden (unless you stand on your head on top of the gear shifter and look into the compartment!)

Lukeatron and Fast1, do either of you have pictures? That sounds convenient. I'd love to see what it looks like. Post them up if you get a chance.

Thanks!

I installed one on the Honda Accord before and it's not too difficult to get to. It requires removing more things than the TSX, but still not hard.

Use this document for a guide. You should only use the sections that involve getting underneath the stereo of course:

for anybody in a similar situation as me I found this video, granted its for an accord but it gets the idea across. Doing this on the TSX seems a lot simpler, but again seems similar.

i prefer the ability to play music via usb, so i'm considering the purchase of the Dension Gateway 300 (http://dension.klikhome.co.uk/products.php?pageID=31). installation looks like a carbon copy of those already provided in this thread.

biggest con? its price. i think i was quoted about $170 CDN for the unit.

I have the DICE adapter (bought it in July of '07) and I have the same problem (it's not that often, but when it happens it's annoying). I thought one of the features was the ability to upgrade it's firmware, but I'm not finding that anywhere on their site!

It's really really annoying when you realize it wasn't recognized just as your getting back on the highway after a rest stop. I was just about to get up their ass about it when my iPod shat itself and I have yet to replace it.

Yeah...it happened to me a couple times when commuting to work. Not too too bad as it's only a 30 minute drive, but still annoying.

Well that was easy....Went in tested it, then took that cubby thing, drilled a hole on the top, droped the Ipod cable in, put a rubber grommit around the cable. Have the Auxilery cable wrapped in the "NOT AN ASHTRAY" spot in case I ever wanna use the Zune. The Cubby slid in easier then I thought. Overall, it was pretty easy. Thanks for all your advice and the luck. Drove around for about 2 hours just ecstatic about listening to crystal clear sound. A hell of a lot better then running my iPhone/Zune through the Tape Deck on the TL, and roughly 1,343,231,340,495 times better then the damn FM Transmitter. But I gotta say, a buddy of mine with an 03 Maxima is using a Monster Cable FM transmitter and it was pretty good. I'd say a step bellow tapedeck, but better then any of the other FM transmitters I tried. I wouldn't pick up the Monster Cable Transmitter because A) It's about $100+, I'd rather spend a little more then that one the USA-Spec, DICE, Blitzsafe etc and get crystal clear sound and B) I hate Monster Cable, overpriced cables....OMG I feel SOOOOO bad for people who think the monster HDMI cable is any better then a $5 HDMI cable....It's digital!! It either works perfect or doesn't work!!!! They used to be awesome when cables were analog, but now they just prey on the ignorant which annoys me.....OK sorry about the rant.

Anyway, It works and is wonderfull, I love USA-Spec. BTW, I seemed to of bought the last one over at Crutchfield...Phew that was close.

Nice. Glad you got that all worked out without any problems. Not that it's difficult to do so or anything. Enjoy.
